Universal Love
Universal love is a terribly maligned concept. People like to claim that "loving everyone" is some sort of hippie leftover, as though the first time anyone ever suggested that loving everyone might be a good idea was 1965. Let me elaborate: universal love doesn't necessarily mean you have to let people move into your home, or give away all of your possessions, or anything like that. All it means is that everyone, without exception, automatically deserves respect, courtesy, compassion and consideration by virtue of being a human being (we'll worry about extra-human intellingences and animal rights later). That's it. It's that simple. Everyone, if you like, is in your extended family. We're all homo sapiens. We all need love. And we all deserve love. The moment you start drawing boundaries -- the moment you say, "Oh, I love everyone... except _that_ guy!" -- you succumb to fear. Because fear, not hatred, is the opposite of love. Most people choose fear. It is much easier. The animal in us wants to fight for limited resources. That's what propoganda does. It dehumanizes the enemy. It says, "It's okay to kill that guy -- he's not a person!" I probably don't know you. I love you nonetheless. You are a person reading this. You deserve compassion, tolerance, consideration, respect and understanding. I will give that to you. I ask that you try to do the same for others. Love. It isn't just a good idea. It's a really, really good idea.Conversations
