ah...cats...
natures most cuddly assassins.
i like : " dogs have friends, cats have staff.."
although 'if dogs were twice as big they'd still be yur best friend,
if cats were twice as big they'd be illegal.'

Shouldn't that last line read:
"If cats were twice as big, they'd be lethal"?

Cats vs Dogs

Cat owners like to say things like "Ownership goes both ways". I disagree. If I'm buying food for, and cleaning up after, a pet, then I own them, as much as anyone can "own" a living thing. All this drivel about "you don't own cats, they own you" is gallows humor. It's people trying to make light of the fact that cats are interesting to own, like a mobile kinetic sculpture, but they are as emotionally giving as a car battery.
And, even if cats _are_ "much smarter than dogs" (which is debatable, if not irrelevant), that does not qualify them to be good pets. Cats are solitary creatures. Why on earth would I want a solitary creature living in my home? I might as well get a fish or a lizard! Dogs make much better pets because there is a fundamental "pack mentality" to them that provides love on a level and to an extent generally unheard of in felines. That's what I look for in a long-term pet. Love. Cats don't look enigmatic because they know the secrets of the universe. They look enigmatic because they have expressionless faces. They have robot masks. Nuts to cats!

It is my observation that people gravitate towards pets who reflect their own personality.
Dog people are usually those who enjoy the company of others and look for approval from them.
A dog's unconditional loyalty towards the pack which provides it with the essentials of life (companionship, food, safety) feeds the owners need for companionship and unquestioning approval.
Cat people, on the other hand are quite happy to be solitary, and may even be called aloof and independent.
Hence, a cat is the ideal pet - the knowledge that a cat, left to its own devices, will provide for itself is reassuring to one who may not always be available to cater to the whims of the animal with whom they share an existence.
It is quite wonderful that the animal world has seen fit to provide companions for both kinds of people.
What this says about people who share their lives with goldfish, snakes, birds or turtles is a matter for further speculation. Anyone want to jump in?

Wrong, wrong, wrong!!!
Anyone that ever owned a cat knows just how much love cats can give. Maybe they don't see their owner as the pack's leader, but they see him as a parent (most pets does. Well, we treat them like parents so it makes sence). A cat might be solitary, but that simply means that it's got a mind of it's own and doesn't look up to you all the time.

*sigh*
Once more I will try to clear up these grave misperceptions.
First off, cat's are not solitary. In fact, lone cats often live shorter lives unless they are included as part of the family to which they belong. Cat's are not pack animals, they are clan animals. There are subtle differences. Much like wolves, cats have 'sentries' and 'hunters' who are often found alone, hence the idea that these animals are solitary by nature. If a cat were truly solitary, it would never attempt to share it's kill with you by leaving dead critters on your porch or pillow.
Second, cat's are just as capable of bestowing affection. They are just much more discriminating than dogs. I have known of many dogs that have returned to abusive owners because they knew they would get some attention between abuses. Cats, on the other hand, will often move to a more accommodating home. As for affection, one has only to look at the face of my cat while he's on his back getting his belly scritched, purring loudly the entire time.
Which brings us to the final point. Cats have more facial expressions than dogs. By almost 50%. Dogs have a 'vocabulary' of approximately 60 catalogued sounds. Cat's have a piddling 35 sounds. But research bestows the greater 'vocabulary' to the cats. While they don't use a lot of different vocalizations, cat's use a large variety of facial expressions and tail positions to convey different meanings to similar sounds. Dogs, on the other hand, use very few facial expressions or tail movements for communication.
Needless to say, I watch a lot of programming on The Discovery Channel and have an extreme fondness for all shows about nature.
[so, anyone need a well-used soapbox?]

My cat hates being on his own. He loves it when we have people around, sniffing everyone out and making friends
or enemies....And as every cat owner knows that they have lots of different facial expressions.
How could you!

How could you possibly say dog are better than cats!?! Dog are midless slobering machines! Cats are the most loving creatures on this planet. When I was at my friends house I got a terrible flu, The cat came liked and nuzzled me, her sweet purr helped my aching head. Then the fleabag (in case you didn't know i mean dog) came slobbered all over me barked and barked and barked and barked, my head felt like falling off. Then he started grolwing and jumping all over me. "He wants to play"said my friend. Well if thats playing I I don't even want to know what they're fighting is like. And I've got bit by a dog twice and never by a cat. And you ain't gonna cath me waking up 5:00 am to walk some mutt. I also happen to like lizards and fish, at least more than dogs. But lets not start a huge fight ok? Anyway, bye.
How could you!

My cat bites me, but only in the most affectionate manner, and he claws great chunks out of my leg when he's settling down on my lap, and you know, now I don't have him (he's home with mum) I erally miss that!!
