Hi Ashley! smiley - bigeyes

I'm replying here, instead of that 360 thread, just to chat about Nairobi. It's too bad we didn't have time when I was up there at the Towers last week. Next time I pass through London, I'll arrange my schedule better, so I actually have decent time to hang out.

I just rode a matatu to this cyber-cafe. It was really a moment of triumph when I realized, a few weeks ago, that I could get on the right one, pay the right amount, and get off in the right place, without even speaking English. smiley - cool I've still got a long way to go, to really fit in here, but it's the little things that keep us going, y'know?

You wrote the Carnivore Entry, which was practically all I knew about Kenya when I first moved here in September. I still haven't been to that place, which would make sense if I were a vegetarian, but I'm not. smiley - huh One of these days...

When were you in NBI? I wonder how much has changed. Viewed objectively, it's a filthy, crime-ridden pit of a city, but seen as the place where I'm learning to live in Africa, I love it! What were you working on here? How long were you around?

smiley - cheers, Mzungu!

I was in Nairobi a few years back making a TV programme. It *is* a crime ridden city, but it is one of those cities that is vibrant and there is always something new to see.

The carnivore is a great place to eat for a treat, but if you want something really special, head for the restaurant in the Nairobi Serena Hotel - it is ridiculously expensive but very good nonetheless.

I would also recommend a day trip to the Karen Blixen museum combined with the Giraffe Center at Langata. It is great to get out of the city. One thing that fascinated me with Kenya was that wherever you go there are people walking - there may not be a village for miles but there is always someone around somewhere. Another treat is the Norfolk hotel - a treat from another era.

If I can be of any help - let me know smiley - smiley
