Oh yeah, I forgot about MUD's. They go back a ways, before the internet became what it is now. I've never been on a MUD before, although I have seen them in action, so to speak.
So, were you hopelessy addicted?

That is, sometimes they have a theme that someone else created, like for example, the Pern games are based in Anne McCaffrey's Pern, but the people who run them tend to decide how the theme is 'lived' by the characters, that is, where in the world it's run, etc.
Pern games all have to get Anne McC's permission to run.

Really. That's kind of surprising. That puts MUDs in a much higher regard than I originally thought. I kind of figured MUDs were semi-underground affairs. Does Anne just give it the OK, or are there directions that the MUD is not allowed to follow (like, "Hey, let's advance the clock six or seven hundred years, and have electricity and dragon DNA facilities, etc")?
What I mean is, are these things monitored once they're given the OK?

Moderately addicted, yeah. I was fairly into administration as well, so it was that, plus the lure of the roleplay.
I've been 'clean' for about three months now

Sounds like you're beyond the stages of denial and acceptance and are well on the road to recovery.
Did you just get tired of it, or did life start getting in the way?

I loved it. I had a lot of online friends (still do, of course, but I don't see them as much ) but it was getting to the point that it was that or RL, and well, RL won.

So now h2g2 is your escape from real life, I presume? For me, it's nice to be able to go somewhere and be silly and/or stupid, and people tend to laugh rather than back away slowly.

Pretty much. Except it's easier to put down when I need to go.
Yes, people IRL seem to think I'm a little odd.
I wonder why?

I, too, am considered by my RL friends to be slightly "hatstand" as the British so wonderfully put it.
I tend to derive amusement from abusing the English language in one way or another. One of my friends burst out laughing not too long ago when I casually referred to an ashtray as a "mahoovian". Don't ask... it's a long story.

Good god - how could I have not picked up on this taking of my name in vain for so long. How very remiss of me.
Anyway, hope you had a good birthday Nick - how old does that make you now, 93, 94?

Oh my God! Er... um... I mean... hello, Frizz! We were just having a nice little chat about...um...the English language or something! Yeah! *That's* what we were just chatting about.
Actually, since you don;t appear to have read my journal entry, I should tell you that I'm 36 now. I still predate all calendraic systems, so you can rest easy - I'm not getting any younger.

Hee, you're right, she DID hear. Hi, Frizzychick!
So, you know, it doesn't really matter if it's a long story, just as long as it's an amusing story.

Uh, that is, um, what a coincidence Frizzychick being here when uh, it's such a lovely day!

I told you. She watches me like a hawk watches its unsuspecting prey. Except, of course, that I have learned to always be suspecting. Thought I might have eluded her that time, though. Should have known better.
Ah well, she's currently in a heap of trouble over her Marzipan Gin article. Apparently, one or two people thought that Marzipan Gin was an actual drink, and it was subsequently made a recommended entry on the guide. Despite her attempts to drag me down with her as some sort of accomplice, I refuse to be drawn into the fray. After all, I only made up the drink (and I'm not even certain of that). She's the one that wrote the (very funny) article about it, and she had to write it as punishment for losing a bet with me over who could post the most references to the word "weevil" on h2g2 in a 24-hour period.
I did say I wasn't normal, didn't I? Of course, neither is Frizz. Hee hee.

Well, I was certainly inspired to add bad haiku to the CotTW, so I guess you deserve your museship
It would appear that you are correct. I went to get the title "Keeper of Weevils" and I couldn't get it because someone pinched a weevil title already. I couldn't beieve it. Turns out it was Archangel Dan, who is a member of the church. I was tempted to claim the title "Keeper of Archangel Dan" but I told Galaxy Babe that I'd settle for "Keeper of Friendly Weevils".
She hasn't got back to me yet.
