I saw this question of yours on an older posting in Ask the Community where oddities of British English were being discussed. The ideal thing would have been for me to read all the postings on that thread, but it has become quite large and I just don't have the stamina. So: just in case nobody has recommended them, Bill Bryson has written two witty books on the subject. Mother Tongue is about the english language and deals primarily with the British variety, while Made in America deals with the evolution of American. Both are very good; I highly recommend them. They're not to fluffy, but not too overwhelming, either. Happy reading! smiley - smiley

Thanks for that! I'll keep my eyes open for those two after I get back from my holiday. Two weeks in Egypt in two weeks time - should be good!
