What does it mean by the minus (-), when somethings just been posted?

Hello 
They've recently installed a new 'fix' on here that means the conversation lists don't refresh at quite the rate they used to (mine seems to have around a two-hour lag at the moment ).
Which means that you also end up with '-1', '-4' ... all the way up to '-42' when it's really busy 
All of which means it's rather hard to tell what's going on: who's posting where and so on.
