Gees I remember when it used to freeze and go slow with anything over 42.

I've *seen* 198 online before. And I wondered if I'd ever just missed 200 by not looking at that particular moment.
So I ran the stats.
And it turns out that we've topped 200 several times. The highest recorded was on 11th September 2003 at 21:15 when 227 registered users were online. This is using the same criteria we use for the who's online list - registered users having visited the site within a 15 minute period.
We've topped 200 on several afternoons recently. Between three and five (GMT) seems to be the busiest time.
