You can't expect people to go searching for information, because h2g2 screws up their login.

Yes, I've had problems as well, and therefore contacted the gurus. They suggested a remedy - which didn't work. They just contacted me again and asked if I'd tried what they'd suggested, and I responded that I had,but to no avail. For the hell of it I just tried again, only to find out that I'm already logged in. As someone commented above, 'very strange'!

I thought there were no gurus any more.

The log in system works perfectly for me as long as I use my user number 151503. I never get logged out except when I choose to log out.

It works for me (now) using my name. I log out the moment I close my browser. I never stay logged in anywhere, I find that uncanny.

That sounds as if it's not recognising the tickbox where you tick to keep yourself logged in.

And what's so uncanny about staying logged in? Once your browser or computer is closed it doesn't mean a thing. It's like having the light switch in the "on" position even if the power is gone

Ah, but then all a burglar has to do is to restore power. He doesn't have to master the light switch...

I don't actively log out. I close the browser. I don't save cookies, or a browsing history. I run ccleaner before shutting down the PC. If I keep all the stuff I collect while browsing/being online, it clutters up my laptop, and it slows it down.

My house may be messy, but my PC is as tidy as I can get it.

You do tick the box "Keep me logged in" when logging in, I presume?

Normally, I don't. I have the tab open, which should suffice (and usually does). It even keeps me logged in if I close the tab, as long as I don't close the browser.

Ok so that's why you're logged out, then.

Well, I want to log out when I close the browser. AND I checked that 'keep me signed in' box today, and the very first thing that happened when I tried to write a post, was the system taking me to my preferences page, and then telling me to sign in.

So checking or not checking that box doesn't influence the glitch, apparently.

Bel, I've just remembered that I do occasionally get a message "We're sorry but you can't post until you've signed in. Please sign in."

This is a bug. All you haveto do is to press the refresh button on your browser. It'll work the second (or very occasionally third) time.

Thanks, Gnomon, it's what I did. Still, you'd think somebody would fix that bug.

Can I just say that I have been hexed as well?

Seems I'm over it, but I'm not quite sure as I am accessing hootoo from a foreign computer. We'll see
