Is that a German site or an English-speaking one, Bel?

German. I thought it would be nice to read some German literature for a change, since most of what I read/listen to is in English.

I've been looking for a few German book tips lately. Is there anything you'd recommend? I haven't read much in German for a couple of years, and I like to keep my hand in.

Anything you're particularly interested in - genre-wise?

Nothing especially. I read a pretty wide range of fiction, so I wouldn't really rule anything out. But I have only read about ten or fifteen books in German that were published after 1970. smiley - blushsmiley - laugh

For funny, wittiy, and malicious you could read Ingrid Noll (Der Hahn ist tot; Kalt ist der Abendhauch; Ladylike; Die Apothekerin (they made a movie of this one)-- she has written more, but these are the ones I have read.

If you don't mind that the target group are youths, there are the books by Ursula Poznanski, like Erebos and Die Verratenen, Die Verschworenen (and Die Vernichteten will be launched next month).

If you like Orks, you could read: Die Rückkehr der Orks, by Michael Peinkofer. smiley - smiley

My very first reading attempt in German were Heinrich Böll. I found them deep but not old-fashioned. I think I've read them all.

For a good laugh and catching up on German contemporary language, try Tommy Jaud - a sort of male version of chick lit. Very light. Extremely light and silly, in fact. "Vollidiot" and "Resturlaub".

The only other German books I've got on my bedside table at the moment are biographies and local history.

Another author that springs to mind is Tanja Kinkel who writes historical novels.

Then there are Frank Schätzing and Patrick Süsskind.

HTH

My husband reads German translations of thrillers (Clive Cussler...) or detective novels (Donna Leon...) for recreation. He won't be reading much more Ovid or Vergil when he retires next month, I expect.

The Liquid Warrior (Vescere bracis meis)

Hi Bel. I think you may be on more often than I. Happy birthday, (beleted).
As to football, it's never really interested me.
My dear lady, though, is looking forward to the tennis.
I shall find work in the garden to do while it's on.
