That's a fascinating story, lil. I didn't know about Goering's brother.

On a lighter note, that page makes me want a "stunning Sukkah mural".

I want one. Now. For my screen porch, since I don't have anyplace to put up a sukkah. smiley - rofl

I read recently that the American creationism and promotion of fundamentalist biblical teaching was a reaction to early Twentieth Century scientific teaching on the purity (or otherwise) of races that was being promoted in Germany. To disagree with the Eugenics argument placed you automatically into the creationist camp!
A strange situation where it was religion versus science and the following of scientific theories led to war.

I'm not sure if it was as simple as that, but it is true that scientific racism gave way to social Darwinism in the late 19th century. And that it was this direction in science that did us all a disservice with its aberrant ideas on 'blood', 'purity', 'race', etc.

In the 1920s, people in rural Tennessee, at least, were merely confused by all this talk. They weren't educated enough to understand the issue, but they had been misled into believing that Darwinism taught that a) humans somehow came from monkeys, and b) the Bible was a lie.

Neither of those things was true, but hey.

three big - er, let's call them misunderstandings - have ruled the world as we know it so far (and probably will forever, i have not much hope of anything else smiley - sigh ):

1. racism

2. nationalism

3. religion

come on, people, scientifically speaking there is only one human race: the human race! which means we are all one family on spaceship smiley - earth and had better try to get along!

forget about nationalism!

religion? well all of this came from somewhere and feel free to base a religion on that, but if you agree with most other religious people why quibble over one god's name? call him allah, if you like, or jehova

me? i'm calling her/him Kim - a gender neutral name smiley - winkeye
