Spontaneous or inconsiderate?

No, I'm not too nice at all. They put up with my son for two weeks, fed him, gave him a room for himself, a PC and internet access. I don't think it's too much work to get a bread out of the freezer.

...okay, the bread is not much work, but giving them your bed is more than that...
(off now for dinner)

Well if something similar happened me, I'd certainly say they were welcome - but they'd just have to take the place as they found it. There wouldn't be any special tidying or the like done, and if they had to sleep on the floor, so be it.
I wouldn't expect anything more if the roles were reversed - I always hate to think of a host making special efforts on my account!

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Sep 29, 2008
Bel, if my wife rang me with similar news, I would expect her to ask me if it was OK first; if it was absolutely necessary that this person stayed with us whether I liked it or not, then I would expect my wife to immediately volunteer to do any work associated with the visit, including cooking etc.
She'd expect the same from me.

Well, they are here now. They said they had intended to go back home tomorrow, but then very spontaneously decided to come here for a night.
My brother said I don't need to cook anything.
They're gone to buy some now, so I told them to bring bread and more milk, too.
Son #1 just asked what will be for supper.

Gnomon, this wasn't a case of emergency, but I see your point.
I guess I'm just too old for such spontanity.

You'd best make sure beforehand that I'm at home. You wouldn't want to make all the way here to find that I'm elsewhere.

Malabarista - now with added pony Posted Sep 29, 2008
I had something similar happen last Thursday - my sister told me she and her boyfriend would be staying the night with only one day advance warning - and Thursday my big project was due, so the house was covered in cardboard, paint, and styrofoam, and I'd slept maybe 5 hours of the last 60.
Fortunately, she came bearing loads of good food from her boyfriend's mother's birthday party, and put me straight to bed after feeding me

To be fair, it's not really my brother causing the stress, it's the husband, with his: do this, do that. It's always like this, and it really spoils things for me.
Funny thing is, he'd never make such a fuzz if it was my sister comeing. And I'd not be stressed at all if she came.

It is more than annoying.
At least, the guests seem to be okay - so that should make up for the misbehaviour of some others in that family (isn't son #1 the one who had moved out?)

Yes. He decided to stay for the night when he heard that his uncle would be here. And he's hungry.
Thank goodness for my pressure cooker. Supper is nearly ready now.

ah, yes, that is convenient - though I don't have a functioning pressure cooker at the moment. Will have to wait for next year - now I need a new washing machine
And it is funny that kids always know they can come to "Hotel Mama"

...as well as to Banque de Mère...
Yesterday #2 had dinner with me, went to the cinema with me and then "borrowed" some money to buy food for since his unemployment money was late...
Sons, brothers, husbands, fathers... they always take for granted that you shall fix food, housing, money, clean clothes whatever...

Thank god I only have sons (and a daughter), though being fatherless (in the meantime) is not that nice, plus my father would rather have helped me than ask for help...
As for sons (and daughters) I know the question: What's for supper today? (but at least they tell me that the cooking was well done almost every day - so I won't complain)

Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~ Posted Sep 29, 2008
before reading who had said (or not said) things i thought to myself "what's the big problem? with such short notice surely nobody can expect anything - at all!"
the fact that they hosted your son doesn't even enter the equation!
apparently both your husband and you brother agreed with my point of view
as for son #1 he should have been reminded that he doesn't live with you anymore
back when i was married i was the one who shopped, cooked and did everything else around the kitchen, so i know perfectly well how frustrating this day must have been for you
ps: and matodemi is right: you *are* too nice. much too nice
