I've had horrible restaurant experiences like that, too. Especially buffet- I can't possibly eat enough to get a return on the investment.
I'd never have thought a Mexican place would be so beef-intensive, either. But I haven't been to a chain Mexican place since I was a kid. I'm fortunate enough to have hundreds of independently owned "authentic" type places.
Oh, and I don't like refried beans, either.
I'm sorry that you were so limited in your choices last night, but glad if you made up for it today.

Oh dear... I am sorry that you had such a bad experience eating what really is a favorite food of mine.
I don't think that the police of "only buffet" is very hospitable..do not go back and give them any more of your precious business.*hands on hips
I do hope that the row with your husband can be sorted out..fights hurt a lot.

Why is it that outside Mexico, it seems that the only kind of Tex-Mex food available is purveyed by large chains?
We have one in the UK called Chiquitos. It is irredeemably bad. I haven't had the misfortune of dining there for many a year, thank BoB. The local branch used to be the venue *of choice* amongst my former cow-irkers in a previous employment.
One of their particular practices was to be extremely, very slow...especially when we went there at lunchtime, and thus really needed to be in and out in one hour. We used to imagine the conversations in the kitchen:
"Oh shit, they've ordered *Mexican* food! Anyone know how to cook that?"
"Err...anyone got any ingredients?"
"Quick! Let's go to Tesco's and get some chillis!"
That, together with their habit of sticking citrus fruit in the top of the beer bottles, has put me off going to a "Tex-Mex" restaurant ever again.

I avoid Tex-Mex places like the plague. It's especially annoying when family or co-workers- especially those from the great cultural void that is the suburbs- insist at dining at one. Especially in a city with thousands of good Mexican places.
During none of my stays in Mexico (my best friend from high school moved there after graduation and I've been dozens of times; till recently one didn't even need a passport, and we could drive down) was I served a beer with a lime wedge in.

There are two excellent Tex-Mexs in Torquay, neither of which are part of chains. I've been to both on a regular basis over sevearl years, and I'm happy to say I've never had the 'lime in beer' experience. I do, however, have three certificates for drinking tequila.
To be honest, Bel, if I treated E like that I'd be too ashamed to go home. If she didn't fancy anything from the buffet, I'd have suggested we went somewhere else. Who's more important; the life partner or the the ex-co-worker? I'm sorry, but it sounds like he was a complete s*** to you, and an apology is the least you deserve. I think he's very lucky to survive with his genitalia intact.
At least the beer was good, that's a saving grace And I did like the '... and so was most of the company' - very telling

Yikes, what a disaster that sounds like. Here, beef is not assumed - even in the chains. It's entirely common to find salads - not interesting ones, but edible ones. Plus, some of the items consist entirely of either corn or flour tortillas which are used to wrap cheese and a chile or two. It's not my favorite restaurant food, personally.
But, it's all very gloppy food and satisfying to throw at those who may deserve it sometimes.

paily, there were salads, and even some veggie soup, but on the few occasions I do go out, I like to eat something I don't eat at home anyway, if you see what I mean.
Oh, and the beans weren't refried - they werent even fried. They were just red beans cooked to a brown mash.

Theres alot to be said for living alone. No one to tell you what to do, or make you feel guilty if you don't do it.
Sorry you have such an unpleasant time

we have few good Mexican-Americana restaurants over here.
Bel, I think you went to an Americana-Mexican restaurant, because they serve more beef.

I've a feeling that I'd have started flinging guacamole about the place at some point. B'el, I admire your restraint.

Mexican food!
Can someone explain to me why they bother with a menu when every item is exactly the same, but arranged in a different order.
Whatever I order I always get a blob of chilli, a blob of guacamole , a blob of cat-sick (that's Aztec for 'refried beans'), and some corn crispy things in one shape or another.

That's awful! I must be more spoiled than I think. Though I do like guacamole...
But I also hate being asked out to eat and then winding up places where my only options are the soup or the salad, and this happens to me quite frequently at work lunches, so I sympathize with Bel.
And then to have hubby be annoyed as if you've done something wrong, Bel.

Sorry to read all that Bel (from the problem of finding the place, the place itself and the behaviour of your husband)
hope you forget this episode soon

Matodemi, I tend to forget such things, but I hope I will remember it next time we're invited somewhere.
