What do you actually have to do as an ACE? Apart from check out new registrations and welcome them, I mean? Do any ACE's have people coming back to them later with questions? Or is there another function they serve?

You probably have to gen up on things like "where do I post a question about ....?" (I mean not the sort of thing you'd ask on "Ask"). Or "Where do I complain about this"?

Even I can't figure out things like that sometimes, after nearly 6 years on the site - it's often been changed. And, if I do have a question, can I come to you with it, even if you didn't ACE me when I joined? (Nobody ACE'd me when I joined - about 2 months later I got a message, by which time I knew my way around)

Yes, you can most definately ask any ACE you choose, it doesn't have to be the ACE who left the welcome message.
Some people come back to their ACEs with questions like 'how do I change the look of my PS, or 'why am I shown as a number?' Which I recall baffled me at first - I signed in with my name, and was shown as a number and things like that. That's what the ACEs are there for, if I don't know, I can ask the other ACEs, somebody is bound toi know - it's hootoo, after all.

Btw, last year I asked you to sign an online petition to save the Thornborough Henges.

That news is absolutely brilliant. I joined English Heritage; along with the National Trust a few weeks ago, so I'll probably be rooting for something else before too long.
