Welcome to my world....
Hello, My name is Gemma and I am a twenty year old music student; at the moment I'm at Oxford but eventually I want to study at a conservatoire in London and get a job in an orchestra. I've played the double bass since I was seven, and music of most kinds is a huge part of my life. My favourite composers at the moment are Mahler and Janacek, but I also really like most of what's on Radio 1 too, and everything changes according to what kind of mood I'm in as well. I try to be open to everything! Music feels to me like how I imagine a vocation to feel - full of so many challenges that sometimes I wonder why I bother but then realise that I don't have a choice, I just have to do it! I know that might sound really pretentious but I don't mean it to. If I wasn't a musician I would love to go to medical school - I love listening to my medic friends talk about what they do (dangerous precedent, I know) and I'm fascinated by and attracted to the mixture of science, people and independence it seems to entail. In many ways it seems that maybe medicine could be seen as some kind of "scientific art" - if anyone understands what I mean... My other thing is languages - I did my "A" levels in French and German (as well as Music...) and took GCSE Russian as an extra study, which meant I also got to spend a week in Moscow and I loved it. I will return one day! I've travelled quite a lot as a musician, to Europe and also Japan. I'm going to the Czech Republic in the summer; hopefully there will be more where that came from! At the moment I live up a spiral staircase in a turret-esque part of one of my college's many random buildings, with my best friend. I love listening to the wind whistle when I'm in bed at night! I used to really love roller-blading in Hyde Park, but I haven't had chance to go there for a while so I'd probably be fairly useless at it if I tried now...Latest Messages
