Hi Ghul'Ruk...
Captain Kebab Started conversation Apr 11, 2003
Hi and welcome to h2g2.
I'm Captain Kebab and I'm an ACE, or Assistant Community Editor, which means I've volunteered to help greet new researchers and try to make them feel at home here on h2g2.
Names aren't exclusive here, although choosing something nobody has used makes sense. When I first saw the name Ghul'Ruk I thought you might be a Star Trek fan - it looked a bit Klingon (not that I'm a Trekkie), but it's pretty Orcish too!
There's loads to do here, so I've put together a page with some h2g2 links that you might find useful - you can get there by clicking this link: A794991. If you'd like to know any more or just want to talk you can click on the 'reply' button you'll see at the bottom of the page and I'll get back to you, or click on my name at the top and you'll find yourself at my personal space. You can leave a message for me there by clicking on 'discuss this entry'.
I hope to see you around soon - oh, and Thingamajig!

*blinks* Fast, indeed...
Just two questions, really. Firstly, am I correct in thinking that I am allowed to make a link to the Shadowclan Orcs website - http://www.shadowclan.com - ? From what I have read in the FAQ, I believe so, but I am still slightly uncertain.
Secondly, when I edited my Personal Space to write an Introduction, to me, though the Introduction appeared in the correct space, it also seemed to act as if I had created a guide entry - A1021681 - When I did not intend this. Is this expected?
Thank you for your time!

Fast? Not always - I was just in the right place in the right time1
I can't see any reason why you can't link to that website - it's not commercial and it's not dodgy in any way - you can have external urls as long as they're not 'unsuitable'. I think it should probably be fine.
And yes, it's normal for your Introduction to be included as a Guide Entry. I've never really thought about why it does it, I presume it's because of the way the technology works. The entry only includes the introduction you have written and isn't a lot of use - all your journal entries (which you can add to or hide, but not edit) and conversations are on your Personal Space.

Thank you for your help!
Unfortunately, I have another question to take some of your time... When I checked my e-mail recently, I received the e-mail with the body shown below, '[email protected]' in the 'From:' field, and 'Please confirm your BBCi registration' in the 'Subject:' field. This was confusing, since I am able to perfectly well log on/in to H2G2.
*pastes text*
You've nearly registered with BBCi.
All you need to do now is reply to this email without changing or adding to

is in your reply. This will complete your registration. Next time you visit
BBCi, you will be able to log in.

Hmm - that's interesting - so you've not replied to the registration email but you can log in okay? Did you actually log off - if you just closed your browser and then came back I think the site would remember you as logged in. I think you should reply to the email anyway, to make sure they don't forget you! In the meantime, I'm off to see the Gurus - see if somebody there can answer this one.

Hello all.
This one has come up before. The registration email is to do with another part of the BBC - both h2g2 and BBCi processes being combined into one when you register here. I'll see if I can find the previous thread (probably on Jim's space). If you plan to use any other BBC sites it is probably wise to acknowledge the email anyway.

Hi Ghul'Ruk and Captain Kebab!
I think this BBC email is to do with the wider BBC registration process.
When you register with h2g2, you automatically create an account with the rest of BBCi. As well as letting you post on h2g2, you can use this account to post on other BBC messageboards. Replying to the email will let you post on these other messageboards (you can find them at http://www.bbc.co.uk/messageboards/), but h2g2 doesn't need you to reply to allow you to post here.
I hope that helps, I think that's the answer, if you have any other queries, just ask.
Jonny

I just surprised myself by finding the thread at the first attempt. Unfortunately Jim never did confirm my guess but it's probably worth reading his point of view anyway: F432?thread=257096

Captain Kebab Posted Apr 12, 2003
to both of you - that never occurred to me. I can't remember what I did when I registered. Mind you, I can't remember what I had for tea last night!
Hope that helped, Ghul'Ruk - you can always find people around here who will help out. Well, this IS the guide to life, the universe and everything!

Ahh. I thank all of you for your help, and for the moment, since I am not particularly interested in the other things mentioned at the moment, I will not reply to the e-mail.
Again, thank you! *looks happy*

If you don't and there's any sort of time-out on it, you may have to re-register and acquire a second identity if/when you do want to try the message boards. This is only a guess though. The process went slightly wrong when I transferred to h2g2 (I found a bug and an error in the instruction text which Jim should have fixed now). I don't know which people may have tried it the other way (from h2g2 to MBs). Some people seem to like acquiring multiple identities anyway.
Hi Ghul'Ruk...
Jonny Posted Apr 12, 2003
I think if you really want to - when you go to a message board if you've not replied it will send you another one - but it's probably best to reply and get the account anyway! There's no harm in it!

I apologize if this has been said, but scanning quickly, I don't think it has. The email simply confirms that your email address works. It doesn't not let you log in if you don't respond.
It's not a huge deal, but you might want to respond to it
