A new dragon doctor in the family :)
Posted Jul 12, 2010
Well, not really but on it's way.
princess just got a message that she has been accepted as medical student at my old University. I'm very happy for her. I've not been that worried, she had very good grades, but she has - as many young women - not been as confident.
There will be some celebration in the Lair this evening.
I'm glad that my not always acceptable working conditions has scared her off. Most of the time it's a fantastic and rewarding job, but the downsizing of the health care system takes its tolls for sure.
I just hope she will be as enthusiastic when she graduates in 2016 as she is now.

DQ back in the Lair, but not in London :(
Posted May 14, 2010
I'm discharged from Cardiology and back home again.
I just had lunch and some PROPER . Not the dark coloured dark foul tasting liquid labelled I've been served the last days. Proper with hot . I'm starting to feel human again...
The Consultant Cardiologist has ordered two weeks of rest and recreation and provided me with a sick note. I'm not supposed to report back to w*rk until May 31st. Stress induced chest pains is the working hypothesis. Good that there was no myocardial infarction. My cardiac stress test was not perfect, but my coronary angiography was so I'm probably not in risk for any major cardiac malfunctions in the near future.
I'm really sad I couldn't make it to London and the HooToo Meet. I've been looking forward to this for a long time. Pity that neither I nor anyone else can use flight tickets, hotel or ticket to Macbeth at the Globe Theatre Sunday evening. I really can't get this unwillingness to change user. Everything is paid for, and it really can't be that troublesome to let anyone else use tickets/accomodation.

DQ is stored in a secure place and not let out :(

HooToo and I share birthday and mine was the 50th this year. It passed peacefully and I celebrated "lagom" - just about enough - with family and friends. A week later I was asked to work overtime by my boss - turned out to be a very pleasant evening with a dozen of my colleagues downtown. First we had a tapa dinner at a Spanish restaurant and then we went for chocolate tasting. Very yummy!
However advancing age takes its tolls .
The last week I've had several episodes of annoying chest pain. Yesterday evening I had a couple of hours when I just sat in my sofa, Leopardess in my lap and breathed through the sensation of someone pulling a wide iron belt round my chest at the same time a vise squeezed my lower jaw. I was pondering about walking down to the ER at the nearby Uni hospital, but decided not to. I was obviously not dying and going to the hospital usually mean you'll be kept there. This is not a good time for sick leave. Lots and lots to do at w*rk, where several colleagues are on (w*rk related) sickleaves. The HooToo meet and the pre selling preparation of a house which has been property of Mum's family for more about 75 years also are also strong opponents of being ill now.
However this morning after tea break, forced by a very determined younger friend and colleague, I called a friend who is a Cardiologist and I was sent to the ER and later admitted to the Cardiology ward where I'm hooked up to oxygen, ECG and the whole apparatus. Preliminary results does not indicate any myocardial infarction, but angina cannot be excluded yet. They intend to keep me here for another day or two
I fear that my planned London trip will be cancelled. Last time I intended to go to London the Queen Mum died, and now this. Guess I should stop planning London trips in advance.
Even though I'd really hate to miss the HooToo meet the house selling is more crucial. I just can't let my both 79 year old aunts do all house clearing and house cleaning by themselves. Hopefully there will be a cousin or two available if necessary.

...and then there were cats... (dq)
Posted Apr 2, 2010
After a very long absence - mostly due to living a quarter of a century with a man claiming he was allergic to cats - a hardly half-year old kitten moved into the Lair some five and a half years ago.
Her Supreme Catesty was the first of the Lair Cats. She was adopted by DJ, but he very soon grew tired of the more mundane tasks of being a cat minion, such as feeding and scooping out litter box. princess and myself took charge of that, and both Her Supreme Catesty and princess pretty soon decided they were an item.
The next summer DJ in a bout of remorse of not giving his younger sister birthday or xmas for years gave her a kitten. Li'l Kitty moved in, an tiny 13 week old kitten thought to be a boy. She was not the vet told us when she was to have her first shots. At first Her Supreme Catesty was less thrilled of the newcomer, and it took a couple of weeks before they were settled.
The summer after that, was adopted from the local cat shelter. He was thought to be about one years old, had spent his life so far in a semi feral cat colony. He was a very shy, tiny and malnourished kitty and it took quite some time for him to accept humans. He caused me a couple of antibiotics courses due to biting me when I put him in a transport cage in order to take him to the vet. Still this day transport cages and don't mix well - he complains loudly once you have struggled to get him in there. He eventually turned out to be a cuddly somewhat jealous kitty, who always squeezes in between when you're cuddling another kitty.
With three cats in a then pretty small Lair it was quite crowded and I was quite content, even though I still had a weak spot for big fluffy red male cats. princess left the Lair and went abroad and of course I found out about a big fluffy red male cat in need of a new home. He was not well kept, his owner's life had turned upside down and she probably didn't have strength enough to deal with her daily life as it was. I paid a big chunk of and brought Lynx home with me.
By then Lynx was just over a year, a rather dominant fertile male and tried to be the king and ruler over the Lair Cats. Her Supreme Catesty Was No Amused so there was a lot of growling and hissing and the Paw once more came to use. Lynx went to the vet, had much of his matted fur shaved and was castrated. After a few weeks the cats had found a way to live alongside each other, even if the Paw was in use every now and then.
Needless to say I soon realised I need a bigger Lair to accommodate the Lair Cats so we moved into the Tower and set up the new Lair. More bookshelves and cat climbing frames were acquired and built in such a ways there are long unbroken cat strolls available.
After a year and a half princess returned and started to search for a Lair of her own. She decided to bring Her Supreme Catesty and Li'l Kitty to her Lair and leave as companion to Lynx. Then became very ill and the outcome was feared to be the worst. By that time I was notified about Leopardess who was in need of a new home rather immediately. Fearing that Lynx would be on his own I decided to adopt Leopardess.
Leopardess, however, had been a solitary cat for most of her four year long life and was very scared and angry when she came to the Lair. Adapting to a place where there already was four other cats was not easy. There were much hissing, growling and fighting - and more antibiotics for me. Out of some reason Li'l Kitty was singled out as enemy #1 - and Li'l Kitty is a very docile kitty.
regained his health somewhat, princess and the two oldest cat ladies moved out - and Leopardess was more content with life. Still there was the occasional unease and the three remaining kitties couldn't decide who was to be the new head of the Pride. A short stint with all kitties at the same place a month later - when princess was cat sitting during emergency trip across the Pond due to the death of the Queen Mum - caused a new stir up. Li'l Kitty had to be taken to the vet for some emergency surgery after being bitten in a hip by Leopardess. She healed without complications, but avoids Leopardess even more since.
Leopardess is more content with life now, she has decided that I am her human, and she is a cuddly lapcat, even if she still can chase Lynx under the bathtub and yell very loudly to keep him there. seemingly needs the Paw (Her Supreme Catesty) to keep in pace and was subsequently moved to princess's Lair some time ago. He is more content with life after reuniting with his older "sisters".
Presently the Lair is crowded with cats, food bowls and litterboxes. All five cats are with me over Easter since all the hatchings are out of town during Easter. is somewhere in the Atlantic, DJ and girlfriend are at a mountain resort and princess is visting her Dad in the South. Yesterday Leopardess and Li'l Kitty managed to share a sofa. I was between them, Leopardess in my lap and Li'l Kitty - and for a while also - slept on a blanket next to me. They don't manage to eat in the same room though, so I've had to place breakfast bowls at several places. I definitely need more time in the mornings just to scoop out and feed cats
It's nice to have the Lair filled with cats once more, but I'm sort of looking forward to when the visitors have return to their own Lair. The present Lair Cats definitely are, they're not that happy over the crashers.
