Hi Emmily,

Thanks for the welcome smiley - biggrin, I will try and keep a regular eye out on the guide, it looks fun and full of interesting info. As to answer your Q's. I dont have a particular wild life programme that is my favourite but my fav animal (well, group of) is the wild cat smiley - smiley. Though at the moment I am working with spiders. At the end of the day, all animals appeal to me, the only one I cant figure out is the Mosquito. I'd love to hear peoples views on why they are here!!!!

Anyway thanks again for the welcome. I am off now for a couple of smiley - ale down the pub. Have a great Saturday smiley - cheers

Kat

*waves* Hi Z ..smiley - smiley..

Nice to hear from you Krazykat..smiley - smiley..

I think mosquetos along with wasps are just here to annoy us..I can't think of any other reason..they serve no purpose..though..it can be entertaining..(after a few smiley - stiffdrink's..smiley - laugh)..to watch someone with a wasp near them..I tend to just stay still til the wasp realises I'm not interseting..&..goes away..do you do the 'wasp dance' ..or..'statue'?

A friend of mine used to have a red kneed tarantulla..called Boris..though..I don't think they should be kept as 'pets'..not really suitable..

If your interested in writing Entries for the Guide..Spiders would be an interesting one..there isn't already a Guide Entry on spiders..the work they put into there webs is amazing..smiley - magic..

Are spiders teritorial?..A few years ago..some new houses were being built near me..whether coincidence or not I don't know..but..I was getting lots of big spiders on my landing ceiling..I'm not scared of spiders..but..I prefer not to have them indoors..I catch them..&..put them outside rather than kill them..back to my question..to try to discourage them..I used my sons very big toy spider on the landing floor..was that just plain stupid..or would the real spiders have taken any notice of it..smiley - sorry..if that question is stupid..I've wondered about that..&..not had an oppertunity to ask it before..smiley - smiley..

Personally, I do the statue...and 'touch wood' I have never been stung. I think the 'wasp dance' is a waste of time....it means that they see that you are moving therefore you are alive and a threat so are more likely to sting you!! Well thats my theory anyhow!!

As for question on spiders, they are very territorial. I dont know of any species that tolerate one another!!! The toy spider is a unique idea and in theory it may have worked!! But in practice it wouldn't! Spiders generally dont have that great eyesight (though there are exceptions). They rely on other senses to detect what is going on around them. Spiders, as do all animals, release pheremones and it is these that are used (in part) to detect the presence of another spider in the territory. Web-spinning spiders also use vibration senses to detect a foreign object on the web. Some can even detect vibrations in water made by poor insects that have been knocked out of the air by rain drops and fall into water and get trapped as their wings get wetted and damaged. The impact with the water and the struggles of the insect cause ripples that the spider picks up on, at which point the spider will walk on the water surface over to the struggling insect and eat it up!! anyway I am digressing...back to your question....as the toy spider a) doesn't 'smell' like a spider or b) move like a spider, the real spiders wouldn't pay any attention to it.

The question isn't stupid, if you don't know, you don't know. One of my favourite phrases in life is 'the fool is the one who doesn't ask why!!'. I tend to live by this and ask questions all of the time. I personally would like to appear stupid but know the answer than appear intelligent and not know anything at all!!
