Introduction of a Student of East Asian and Near East Studies
A brief introduction the members of the community:
I have been actively studying the above referenced subjects since 1965. I see my role here as multi-faceted: first, a source of information in an era of pop media, dominated by corporate 'news entities' who seek to entertain instead of accurately informing the public of the complex issues we face. The information these entities, from the NYT, to CNN, to NPR, to the BBC and MTV do intentionally mislead the public, however. It is simply too large a task to ask these outlets of information to provide the wealth of reasonably factual information to the public. Reporters and editors cannot provide news in an unbiased manner, as they must greatly abridge and manipulate 'stories' to meet their goals, deadlines and financial needs of the news corporations for whom they work.
I will be pleased to answer any questions regarding the current world situation which, at this moment, is at the brink of war whose outcome and long term effects cannot be known with any degree of certainty.
Second, I will write essays commenting on world events in an effort to help anyone and everyone to be understand why we are where we are today. My knowledge of American history is extensive as well. I will also submit essays I have written in the past year which you may find useful. Of course, I have certain opinions about the events which we all are a part of today. I hope we can have some genuine and important discussions regarding the near east, southeast Asia, American domestic policies, including race relations, poverty, education, prison reform and any other issues which you believe important to our well being as a nation and a people.
I am now retired from the U.S. Government service, teaching and related university work. I now spend my time backpacking at many locations in the U.S., writing, and continuing to study many areas of interest to me. I am also a combat veteran of the conflict in Vietnam.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
