I've read a good book! It's . . .
Last Chance to See by DNA and some other guy.
Grandma betsy gave it to me for my birthday, which you seem to have forgotten (I'm watching the mail for that present)
Did you get my postcard? One of the ones I mailed on Wimpy got to my friend who lives down the street on thing, and one to west virginia on doobry. So yours should be coming soon.
And I'm touched. Someone actually read my PS and remembered something I said. AND gave me credit for it.

I would like to borrow THe Mother Tongue sometime. Will you be done with it by the time we come up? Because then I could read it and get it back to you when we go to NS, if that's okay.
Grandma also gave me The long dark teatime of the soul, but I already have it, so heather took my second copy. That's a very good book too.
Books for you to read-1984 (george orwell) Brave new world (don't remember author) Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte) The Hours (? michael cunningham? cunnings? don't remember exactly) and as always, anything by DNA and also Douglas Adams's starship titanic (by terry jones)

I put Last Chance to See on my birthday list, but I honestly don't know if I'll get it or not . . .

*I* remembered your birthday! Unfortunately, Mom & Dad are in charge of outgoing mail . . . I will bother them. smiley - sorry

Oui, j'ai ton postcard. You mean the one that's completely en Francais, I assume? smiley - biggrin

Yes, I'll probably be done with The Mother Tongue . . . problem is, it's a library book! So you can borrow it, but you'll also have to pay the late fee. On the other hand, I'll stick a copy in your birthday package if I can find one, if you like. It's quite interesting.

Thanks for the recommendations! Sorry I didn't respond to this post sooner . . . someone wanna explain to me why posts made in my personal space don't show up on my Postings list?

Actually, they should. Mine do. I don't remember precisely, but I think you may have to subscribe to be notified about conversations for that entry. Ask a guru.
(or ask demon drawer, if you've met him. I believe he's an ex-guru)

I'll reply to the rest of this later, but I have lots of stuff to do before tomorrow morning. smiley - yikes

Going to Pennsylvania this weekend to see Lucia's graduation (cousin on dad's side). We're flying out on Friday, coming back on sunday. And of course, since she goes to a catholic college we have to go to mass on saturday morning before graduation, and then again on sunday (our plane doesn't leave until one) simply because it's sunday. Oy. But my grandma (dad's mom) just wrote and said that they have a whirlpool in their hotel room that they'll let us use. (Heather is staying in CT with mom to do race for the cure for her bronze award)
I need to read Animal Farm for tuesday, and rather than bring my literature textbook on the plane I wanted to check the book out of the school library, but I could not find it on the shelf, so I asked and it turns out that you can only check the book out with the CD set, so I have them packed to read/hear on the trip (there's a drive from the airport to the hotel and college that will be in the dark)
And I finally finished my silver. Sent in the paperwork last week!

You can only check out the book with the CD set? What on earth is the logic behind that?!

Congrats, Jen! smiley - cake I've finished the prerequisites and have kind of gotten stuck - I don't know what I want to do for my project. smiley - erm I had a good plan (I wanted to do something for Green-Up Day) but I wasn't ready this year and next year it'll be too late (I'd have to miss the awards banquest and everything, which is just no fun.) So I'm trying to think of something new, creative, and . . . well, moderately easy. smiley - biggrin Suggestions are welcome!

What IPs did you do for your preresiquites? Were they plant related?
If so you could do something with a garden or beautification for somewhere. But I really can't help until I know what IPs your project has to be made to fit. smiley - winkeye
Of course you could always do different IPs and go from there.

I don't know what the logic is there, but we listened to almost half of it on the way there (not on the return trip to airport because we were afraid of leaving the CD in the rental car). So I have that much less to read. (It was dark by the time the plane landed, so I couldn't read in the car and we listened instead)

Sort of plant-related - Plant Life smiley - smiley, A World of Understanding, and Visual Arts. My troop was going to do a mural/mini-garden in the town center, but a group of landscapers got there first. smiley - grr

Incidentally, the other IPs that I've done are Leadership, Space Exploration, Exploring the Net, American Patriotism, and The Lure of Language.

I'm almost done with Creative Cooking, It's About Time, Once Upon A Story, Reading, Folk Arts, and Women Through Time . . . I could probably finish one of those for a Silver Award Project.

Speaking of books . . . I just finished Of Mice and Men for Language Arts. Have you read it? Perhaps we could have a deep, intellectually stimulating conversation about its content. I found it very interesting, to say the least . . .

But did you complete the leadership award, or did you do the leadership IP instead? because then you cannot use it as one of the three IPs needed.
And you should have told the town. I'm afraid that was just poor planning and making assumptions on the part of your troop.
Maybe a community garder or something. I'll think about it, but now I'm working to come up with a gold idea. My friend and I were going to create a sensory garden in our town near the boundless playground, but you are not allowed to work with other people on your gold award, so I gave the project to her. (after my initial idea she was the one who had done the "legwork", or as much as we were able to do as we are not yet seniors)

Can you give me an author for Mice and Men? I will read it if I can get a copy.

I did the Leadership IP instead of the Leadership Award.

Gee, thanks! smiley - tongueout We were fiddling around with the idea of doing something at the town center, but really, anyplace in town that would look nice with a garden/mural would do. Maybe the school or something, except it would probably be trashed by mad, adrenaline-high eighth-grade boys after their basketball games, so that's out. Anyway, we were going to do something as troop, but we can't anymore because our troop is only two girls, and we decided that we might as well just do projects on our own.

Sensory garden? Sounds like a very cool idea. What sorts of things would you put in a sensory garden, exactly? (We don't have anything like that near Shelburne, so I must admit I'm rather clueless.)

John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men. smiley - smiley

We don't have one around here, but I have read about the concept. A sensory garden exists to plase more than just the sense of sight. Flowers should be brightly colored, and attract butterflies and birds. Touching is allowed and there should be plants with interesting textures, like fuzzy leaves. Flowers also should have scents, strong, pleasant ones are usually best. A water element is sometimes involved, for hearing water noises and also touching. Wind chimes, etc may also be included to provide other nice noises. The whole thing should be handicapped-acessible, with wide, paved walkways and benches to sit on. Beds should be raised to allow touching/looking/smelling without bending over and at a good height for a seated person to see. Some gardens have handrails with braille text on them. Overall, it should be a very pleasant place.

Sounds like an awesome project, Jen, albeit a big one! Good luck!

I'll be seeing my troop leader over the weekend, so I hope to talk to her about project ideas then. If I come up with something before then, I'll mention it here in case you're interested . . .

Of course I'm interested!

But it's not my project. It was my brainchild, but I gave it to another girl in my troop, who picked it up. She was the one who looked for a place to put it, etc. And I think that it would be a fun project but that I can probably come up with something I'd enjoy more. So I will be helping her plant stuff if the project gets off the ground, but won't have any real input, as it's not my project.
