Insight

I have been reading through the discussion about the Bible, and your knowledge is impressive. What religion are you?

Hermi the Cat

Hi Insight. I was infant baptised Presbyterian, raised Methodist, spent some years nondenominational Christian, put my husband through a Baptist college, and am currently attending a Baptist church although I do not have a problem with attending any church or denomination that agrees with my doctrine.

I believe the Bible is critical to understanding God and so have tried to learn much of it. I believe that God reveals Himself through Scripture and personal revelation (prayer). I don't seek insight from extra-biblical sources unless I can find a clear connection between those sources and scripture (as opposed to a claimed connection).

I believe that scripture indicates that the time for verbal revelation ended after Christ's final instructions to John. Subsequent interpretations and writings are imbued with human failings and should be considered with caution -- just as translations can contain errors. I think subsequent writings that claim to be equal to the words of Christ, divine revelations or prophecies are very suspect. Some examples are Papal decrees and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, Charles Taze Russel, Joseph Smith and Ellen G. White, to name a few.

You said in your post that you were Jehovah's Witness. I find much to admire in your religion but also much that I disagree with doctrinally. Your post was well thought out and indicated that you are knowledgeable about scripture. I actually had run across your postings and viewed your space before you posted to the Question for Biblical Scholars and, like you, wondered where you were coming from.

Thanks for asking.
