i never really thought of the vines as punk, more indy. And i haven't heard of any of those bands!

I like The Vines precisely for that reason - they retain the spirit of punk but they're really rock'n'roll... they're shouty and fun. Must get their album, but I want Interpol's first.

Pychocandy - here is the track listing for the Aussie compilation CD. For anyone not familiar with these bands, they are forerunners of the Hives, Datsuns, White Stipes, Vines etc.
Drawing on the energy of The MC5 and the Stooges, they combined these influences with Punk to produce fast, tune filled, often primitive sounds ('60's gararge rock was a big factor as well). You can order from:- www.shock.com.au.
The title is: Do the Pop! -Various Artists

Eastern Dark! Another bloody good band... If anyone happens to spot the single "Johnny & Dee Dee"/"Judy is a junkie", just buy it!!! Do I really need to comment their influences? I truly think this band would have gone much bigger if their singer hadn't died early in the proceedings. Don't know what happened to the other members. Anyone knows?
Piece of personal news: I lead a rock choir and we're about to start working on 2 new numbers: "Anarchy in the UK" and... "Holiday in Cambodia"!!! Can you imagine that by 20 screwed up froggies without a single instrument nor the slightest watt of electricity?
Good site to revise your classics or discover them if you're young:

It's called "punk rock in my veins". Eloquent...

Omigod, yes I can and I think I'll steal the idea for a novel (Novelists are just very good thieves!)

Are you talking about the choir thing?
PS: Translator for a living, I'm also working on a novel at the moment.

I'm a translator too, just not practising... I had a novel published in 2001 and am looking for a publisher for the next one!
And yeah, I was talking about the choir, it's just too quirky to pass on

Hope you noticed that you can listen to some of the stuff. That's includind 2 now dead French bands: La Souris Déglinguée (I'm not a fan but I like their attitude) and Camera Silens (from Bordeaux, near me, who were much better. Listen to "pour la gloire". Big sound.
I really find this site is ideal for someone who wants to get a general idea of what punk rock is about. Still looking for more, though...

Chan-mick, your choir sounds like a fantastic idea! Is there any way for me to read about it online?
You simply MUST record it - and send me a few tracks to play on my show!

Thanks for your enthusiasm, my dear punk friends.
The choir existed about 6 years ago but collapse short after I moved to England for a few years.
It's only started again last summer for a wedding party and we got carried away. This is great fun but we haven't a lot of material at the moment. The repertoire is far from being entirely punky though (Lou Reed, Mamas & Papas, Spencer Davis Group...).
We're not ready for recording or gigging yet but I reckon we should be able to perform next summer.
I'll let you know.
I'm not staying long as we're having moderation problems on the Franglais thread. (Mind your language then...)

Chan-Mick, the choir sounds great! I also hope to be able to hear what you guys sound like some time. Thanks for the link... hey I haven't listened to Abrasive Wheels in years! Every day here I'm reminded of or introduced to something great!
Superdogmonkey, thanks so much for the track listings for "Do the Pop!". I'll have to try to locate it. Wow, the Hoodoo Gurus, haven't listened to them in a long time, either. Great stuff there! *sighs*
As I'm mainly familiar with British, Aussie and American punk bands, I'm looking forward to checking out some of the other bands you all have mentioned. So much good music, so little time...

As everyone seems to like the concept of my choir (thanks) I've got to tell you what it's called: There's a famous French children choir (the religious sort) called "les petits chanteurs à la croix de bois" (The little choirboys(or girls) with the wooden cross). Thanks to some silly French expression, we just had to change one word to become "les petits chanteurs à la gueule de bois" (The little singers with a hangover!!!).
And in true punk fasion, the only thing that comes to my mind is:
START YOUR OWN CHOIR!!!
We could have yearly conventions and all...

superdogmonkey, any idea if it's possible to get the compilation over here in Europe? Sounds great!
Abrasive Wheels? Still got a 7 " of them, from 81, as far as I remember... "Vicious Circle"...
