The fascinating tale of Petulant Abacus
The story of Petulant Abacus before he came to Earth is long, complex and impossible to properly explain.
Consequently, no attempt will be made to explain it here.
However, it is not too difficult to describe his current lifestyle and how, in a general sense, he got there.
Petulant is a researcher for the guide. While he is currently residing on earth, he is not (unlike the well-known Ford Prefect) stranded - rather he quite likes Earth, as planets go, and anyway why bother going too far when we've got the Internet? Eh? Eh? Listen -
And so on.
Petulant (whose name was selected based on how nice it sounded, resulting in an unfortunate title that actually means 'Irritable/snappish early calculator'. Fortunately, Petulant has managed to fit in rather well by simply claiming that his parents were 'hippies' - this seems to halt any questions about his name, or indeed any of his curious habits) has basically set himself down on earth as a sort of home base - he can make observations about the galaxy around earth with only a little travel, and can gain knowledge on more universal topics such as 'love' and 'taxes' and 'that darned [blank] music that kids play these days' quite easily from the planet itself. It would appear that some things, especially irritating music, can be found absolutely anywhere.
On earth, Petulant claims to enjoy writing, drawing, basketball, and various other boring earth activities and sports that help him to seem more normal. He has a dog, a family, and due to his unfortunate appearance (fully grown males of his race look like teenage earthlings), attends one of those pompous private schools that everyone secretly hates.
He is known to his friends as ‘a frood who knows where his towel is’ - although his earth friends don't use the word frood, and are often rather confused as to why exactly Petulant always knows the location of his towel. They tend to assume that he is either 'one of those eccentric writer/drawer types', or simply very clean.
Some think he just likes towels.
