God's beautiful world

I have lived for quite a long time already and I have never before
seen the kind of sunset I saw tonight. I was sitting at the beach, the sun was setting behind me and I watched the sky to the south, on my right, turn red. Slowly the red spread to my left, the north, and all the way round to join the golden light around the sunset. Suddenly the whole sky became a red and golden dome with a few white clouds above me. I kept twisting my head around, unable to believe what I was seeing. It was so beautiful. The sea in front of me had turned red, my grandson, playing in the shallow water, became red. I called to him to look up and he called back, saying: God is putting on another show for us! I could only think what a beautiful world this is, remembering Borrow's poem "life is very sweet. Who would want to die?" And there are people waging war right now and many of them will never again see a beautiful sunset.

just back from visiting my daughter
Posted Dec 13, 2002
My daughter lives in the capital of this country (Brazil) and I flew there to visit her. She has a husband and two lovely girls, 12 and 14. They live in a phantasy town placed in the middle of the continent, created 40 years ago out of nothing. It's like suddenly landing in Europe. People dress in suits, live in atypical buildings, walk among trees and grass and flowers and drivers are not out to kill pedestrians, they stop for them. Steps behind you don't mean somebody is going to rob you. People greet strangers and are polite. Men still open doors for women and they all smile. Compared to the rest of the country, it's utopia. I am still reeling in the Northeast, in the heat, not quite believing that people who govern this country have invented for themselves a kind of paradise the rest of the population can hardly imagine. Still digesting.
