Hello my dearest friend and very faraway lady!

I just re-read your account of your husband's death and it brought back floods of memories that I was not ready to re-live just now. Reading it made the faces, smells and sounds of that day come rushing inside my memory bank like a splash of cold water on my mind, jolting things long stored away.

Pain doesn't go away, feelings don't just disappear. They are neatly stored away until some catalist brings them back in a hurry. This week, I have had to bury my dearest, littlest member of my family - not a human one, but a family member nonetheless - and my nerves are raw.

Your poem/narrative of the "Death of a Husband" made me realize once more how precious life, love and friendship are! You have always been there for me and our friendship has survived 25 years of separation accross the Atlantic Ocean.

I am glad to see that I made a difference in your life as well. I thank you for acknowledging that.

You are part of that terrible time, but you are also part of better times, like when we were English teachers and had lots of fun with secret friendships, getting all the students excited, like on your honeymoon on the waterbed in one of my rooms, like planting little cactus-like things in the garden, playing games at night, you wanting to throw vegetable peels in my face for vitamins and so on. I hope that life has been good to you over the years. I bet it has; you just seem like the kind of individual who thrives on goodness and vitality. I first encountered you and your heart-felt thoughts from this eulogy of sorts you wrote, seemingly as a way to work through the emotions of this personal calamity--> F2207549?thread=718511.

I apologize for not replying to your return postings on the subject of your written expression of love and grief and recovery. The posting "slipped below the horizon" of the current conversation threads and got lost in the older posts. If you have a moment to spend, if you still take time for H2G2 (and it seems you do), please give me an update on how things are in Brasilia or wherever you find yourself these days.
