Hey, stunningfrenchie! 'putting one's foot in one's mouth' (your question in post 40) has a punning history worthy of all this madness around you here.

It means making a gaffe - gaffe is an English word as well as French (we stole it from you). Saying something that would unintentionally embarrass the other person.

Originally we said, for example, "You really put your foot in it when you mentioned his wife". The "it" you put your foot in was understood to be something nasty on the ground.

Then we said, "Every time he opens his mouth, he puts his foot in it". "It" was the same as before , but there was also the comical interpretation that "it" referred back to the mouth. Then that joking meaning gradually took over.

Hence the expression.
