I was just archiving some of my Snippets into the external hard drive, that Mk2 gave last Christmas, and I just clicked on one already there and got a shock!

It was blank, so were a lot of the others?? It seems my copy of Word is in doubt, and our lad says I need a newer version in order to open all those blank ones>
So much for backing up all our data then, even the copies that I had burnt to disc were no good wither, it opens some of them, but not them all.

So we installed Word 2007 which I had on disc, and that didn't open them either, so it looks like the only place where they ALL are, is in here, which is rather fitting in a way as I wrote them for smiley - thepost on here.

So if any technical minded person reads this, could they please tell me what I need to do, so that I can read all the archived ones?

A slightly frustrated silver surfer will be most impressed if that could happensmiley - winkeye

Gosh. Well all the published Snippets are on here, so they're not likely to disappear anytime soon! What is it you are trying to retrieve using Word?

hi smudger
-
when i had my pc years ago,
-
i found the the support for windows, was the place to find the latest updates.
-
try, click start, acsess the support option, put the item you want into the search, and it should find you the lastest version if its for windows.
-
another option is to put what you want into google, for the latest version, and upload to the pc,
-
hope this helps you, smiley - dragon jim

Hi Jim, the thing is I will have to Buy it? I did have the 2007 version with the code, but it still wouldn't open them?smiley - erm

Beatrice, I had backed up all my Snippets onto discs as well as on the external hard drive, and while I was backing up some photos, I checked one of them. It would not open it, so I checked more and it only opened around 10% of them allsmiley - erm
It was the same with the ones on the external H/Drive?

Our lad reckons they will be visible if I installed Word 2009, if not they have become corrupt during transfersmiley - ermsmiley - wah

Hi Jim, Yea! our lad is going to look into that, as he says some of these free D/Load sites can be dodgy for viruses?

The thing is Jim, they were all backed up using Word but now it wont open them all??

Hi Folks, thanks to you all for your help, I really do appreciate it. I have found a free program that came with Vista, its called OpenOffice, so I am going try and use that, it means I will have to delete the lot that are on the external hard drive, then open them all one at a time and paste them into a folder?

It might take a long time to do, but hey! with winter coming I should have plenty of timesmiley - winkeye

I will also have to ditch all the back ups I put onto disc, but this time I will use a 4Gb disc, then I can burn them all on to one discsmiley - cool

Thanks again for your help folks, it made me feel part of the site again, as I was drifting away slowly?

I was told that Open Office did not recognise the common Word docs and MS files careful smiley - smiley

Aye! what ever program I do use, it must end with .doc as that s how they were stored using Word.
In fact I've just checked and its only a few that wont open, so its not worth giving myself all that work of changing them over.smiley - winkeye

hi smudger
-
as long as you have them.
-
keep in mind the flashdrive storage, its safe and until you delete them, its always there to return to any pc, handy if the pc crashes.

not that it will help open them but I suggest saving them in notepad or word pad whenever possible so it'll be more compatible with other computers

hi smudger.
-
i find its easyer to do on a page on h2g2, then cut and paste, transefer to a new email, then save to draft. its keeps the pc from taking up space.
-
i use a hotmail or live.co.uk one. then if i want to re transfer, i just cut and paste to where i want it.
-
once i have the h2g2 guide one, i tend to delete,or clear to use again. just an idea. smiley - dragon jim

Open office is not 100 percent compatible but for basic text and images in word document its fine. don't worry about it. It's not compatible as .doc is a closed format and Open Office is not made by microsoft.

What are these snippet things? Pictures in guide entries? you could right click on the picture and click save as and save them to your desktop or somewhere like that. Hope this helps!smiley - biggrin Links for the snippets would be good as i could save them and email them to you if that possible and nothing else works.smiley - smiley
