Was the non-pelican stew made for survival purposes? -- YES
Had the man known that the non-pelican stew was human stew when he first partook, but forgot? -- No
If he had known and forgot, was the insanity due to his remembering? -- N/A (see previous)
Did the man kill the person in the non-pelican stew (I know you said he didn't know the person, but people do kill strangers)? -- No

Ok , so the man has in the past , been shipwrecked or something and has been given something to eat and when he asked what it was , was told it was 'pelican stew' . But it wasn't , it was human stew . And now he has realised this he has gone insane .

Just how did he realise that the 'pelican stew' was human stew, apart from the taste. He had not had human stew before, or had he??
