Interested and concerned people want to know how you are doing post-Katrina. And now it is pre-Rita... We are worried, you know.
Let us know. Email me at [email protected] if you don't have time to post here.

Have a loobrush from me too B4! You know, by mistake I once even tried to use it as a smiley, like this

Sorry, sorry, sorry. Been so caught up in personal affairs and working 12-hour shifts for our Refuel Outage 14 that I haven't many moments to even remember I'm part of the HooToo community.
My Mom weathered the storm well. A friend of our oldest daughter stopped by her house just before-hand and they made it through the ordeal together. We lost contact for about four days, then I started getting text messages from my daughter, relaying info from her friend about my Mom.
The home sustained only minor damage from the winds ripping off the shingles from the south side of the roof. All her cypress trees (replanted or replaced during last year's storms) were all bowled over again and died. The large sycamore in the center of the back yard and the oak tree toward the back of the property both were uprooted. My Mom says there's quite a bit more blue sky visible nowadays...
The storm surge had to travel inland about 6-7 miles to reach her home, and encroached upon the edge of the back yard, but didn't make it as far as the house. It's what we prayed about, and we're all thankful she was spared any massive dammage. She's currently dealing with the insurance adjuster and contractors to remove wet insulation in the attic over two spots where the roof leaked in, but that's minor stuff and is getting resolved quickly.
My Mom had phone service and power restored on the fifth day after Katrina. In-between times, she just used the large (heavy) cast-iron smoker/BBQ in the back yard to prepare steaks until it became untennable for her to trust their freshness from the defrosting freezer in the outside washroom. All-in-all, she's made it through the situation relatively unscathed.
I had thought to travel down there in my new Jeep, with extra tanks of gas, and retrieve her, but the authorities weren't letting anyone into that area. It would have been pointless for me to even attempt it. We've been in regular contact with her and she's getting back to some semblance of normalcy in her daily life, though any medical needs will still be dicey for a while, since Keesler AFB took a big hit in that facility. She'll have to depend on local doctors and practices for those things for quite some time.
I've tried to coax her to come to Mid-MO, where we get four distinct seasons and the worst problem seems to be the occasional tornado. She's of a mind to stay and repair what she and my Dad spent 30+ years making into a home. She had momentarily considered moving back to Germany with the rest of the relatives, but balked when she took stock of how much more it would cost her to live there. Also, her medical needs would not be provided for in the same manner she's accustomed to receiving. So...she stays, she repairs, she continues on in her typical stoic "little German lady" fashion.
Anyway, things are better and are working out just fine...

Very good to know all that, B4 - you can tell your mother that there were people all over the world worried about her!

I'll be sure to tell her you folks were pulling for her to make it through. It will be encouraging for her to know that so many others from all walks of life and all over the globe believed the best for her.
