instructions :
ok. here’s a list of everyone that has posted in this thread so far. it gives everyones official time in relationship to Greenwhich Mean Time (GMT). thus you will be able to ascertain whether they are likely to be online or asleep or whatever, unless they are burning the candle in which case your guess is as good as anything
to convert to someone elses time take your current time, add or subtract your own official time to get GMT, then add or subtract the other researchers official time to get their current time. (it helps to think of yourself as one side or the other of GMT)
eg right now it is 11 pm NZT. to find out what time it is in colorado i subtract 13 hours to get GMT, and then i subtract 7 hours.
NZT - 13 hours = GMT, - 7 hours = colorado time
so 11pm NZ - 13 hours = 10 am, - 7 hours = 3 am Colorado
to convert someone elses time to yours, do the reverse
eg when Terri signed off her 9 hours it was 7.48 am. to get NZT i go :
Angoulême : - 1 = GMT , + 13 hours = NZT
7.48 am - 1 = GMT + 13 hours = 7.48 pm NZT
ALSO CHECK THIS OUT - go to : U203563 and post in the relevant section and then you will turn up on this fabulous page : A831656. (a h2g2-wide version of timezones)

" i can't imagine scientist's buying that article yet though.. don't engineer this plant to resist weedkiller because it might mutate and destroy Britian if we all go blind.."
oh, i don't know...
i don't remember what the triffids were originally designed for. from what i remember the G.E. issue wasn't big in the book, it was more about how people cope and related with each other in drastic situations. i was very influenced by that.
i also was a big fan of the brittish tv series 'the survivors' (was that what it was called ?), for the same reasons. when everything else was stripped away people really had to depend on each other. or not as the case may be.

yes that's the really interesting thing.. psychology crops up again.. I also remember reading Lord of The Flies in school and wondering how our class would cope if we were dropped on a desert island!

I think one simply has to keep 2 seperate threads going in one`s mind-there`s no way to keep pace w/both-back to psychology.!

Psychology is bound to come up as this is a humanities-oriented site.Anywhere they`re people one has Sociology, with Soc.one has psychology. It`s just the way I naturally think-most people wouldn`t be able to articulate it,that`s all~

You're doing a brilliant job there kea!
I reckon if us lot were in the survival situation, we'd do pretty well actually, might fall down a bit on breeding the next generation though (you're supposed to have lots of nice fertile heterosexual couples, or at least 1 willing bloke & umpteen fertile, not necessarily willing, females)
I read a thing in a book recently about how people would make choices of who to include based on their personal ethics, I'll try & track it down (it's in the loo, anyone else have a library in the loo? Some people think I'm !)

FOUND IT!
Scenario: WW3 about to happen, you are a government decision maker, a fallout shelter in remote highland has enoughspace, food, air & water for 6 people for 3months, but 10 people wish to be admitted. They have agreed by radio contact that for the sake of the survival of the human race, you must decide which 6 will be saved. You have 30 minutes to choose:
1) A 16yr old girl of questionable IQ, who is a high-school dropout & pregnant
2) A policeman with a gun (which cannot be taken from him),thrown off the force recently for brutality
3) A clergyman, 75
4) A woman physician, 36, known to be a confirmed racist
5) A male violinist, 46, who srved 7yrs for pushing narcotics
6) A 20yr old Black militant with no special skills
7) A former prostitute, female, 39
8) An architect who is a male homosexual
9) A 26yr old law student
10) The law student's 25yr old wife, who spent the past 9months in a mental hospital & is still heavily sedated; they refuse to be separated
Interesting?!
(there are no right or wrong answers by the way, it's given as a discussion topic for students studying values clarification)

can i just clarify this - as the decision maker i won't be in the bunker for 3 months with these people ?
that the decision is purely for the survival of the human race ?

U don't take the clergyman for one...

zendevil Posted Jan 18, 2003
I've printed it just as it is in the book, I assume you're not in there with them (probably got a nice cosy bunker of your own with other government decision makers; a far scarier prospect!)

i don't think you can decide based on occupation. i mean the clergyman might be an amazing person for all we know. or a right tosser.
i'm tempted to pick no one. do we really want to save the human race if we're about to blow the rest of our species to smithereens ?
