Yeah, but it's not a question of "bothering" you, it's where you learn how to use stow, and things like that. I assume you've built your own kernel before? Mandrake's default kernel is bloated and horrible, and yet still doesn't provide support for most people's hardware...
Why on Earth did you switch from a medium-quality distro to Mandrake (which is really for Windoze lusers who can't be bothered to learn how to use the OS)? I switched from RH7.2 to Debian woody, then to Debian sarge, and now I'm on Debian sid, which IMHO is the best of the binary distros.

Don't have a go.
What I intend on doing is downloading distros and burning them onto CD when I eventually get broadband to try them out.
I got RH and Mandrake from a magazine disc.
Is that ok?

I'm not having a go. There's nothing wrong with Mandrake. I'm just surprised that someone would switch _from_ Redhat to Mandrake, rather than the other way round. Most people would start on an easy distro like Mandrake and move to something for people with a little more experience...
Aha. If you don't have broadband yet, it might be best to stick to binary distros because most of the software you'll need is on the discs (although in the case of Debian it makes sense to have broadband, as you can just install the necessary bits to run the system and get the rest from an apt repository).
Take a look at http://www.distrowatch.com/ for a quick comparison (although it doesn't seem to be working atm).

What I need is a computer that has linux on it so I can tinker around with it.

Aye, that's always good fun. Get a cheap box (a 386/486 will do just fine) and tinker with a small linux distro for fun .... LRP is an incredibly small distro designed for routers that fits onto two floppy disks

Problem is 386/486s are hard to get hold of, the last 486 I had, I butchered parts from for a pentium 133 which now won't work because of a funny power unit

Don't trust ebay. But with two non working computers and 4 working ones I don't really need to buy another just yet.
