Music for Sunday October 13, 2002
Posted Oct 11, 2002
Normally, we have 4 selections for the service: Prelude, Offertory, Meditation, and Postlude. This week, however, we will be having live music provided by Dave Olsen and Jonny O.
Dave's site where you can listen to some of his music is http://www.justthink.ca/ (a clickable link -- or "lickable clink" as a friend calls it). Jonny O is the mastermind of The Junkyard Symphony... see: http://www.junkyardsymphony.com/
As a result of having the live music, we will have recorded music only for the Prelude and Postlude. The music I have selected is from the CD "8 Seasons" by Mari Boine.
For the Prelude, I chose "Sarahka's Wine" and the Postlude will be "Tundra Flower".
The CD, available from Amazon in the UK and USA, and Indigo/Chapters in Canada, is on the Jazzland label (Universal, I think) Catalogue # 0170192.
You can listen to Mari Boine at the Jazzland site: http://www.jazzlandrec.com/catalogue.html
Mari Boine is Sami from Lapland. The Sami are the indiginous people from Northern Europe, Scamndinavia, Russia. Traditionally herders of caribou and reindeer, they, like most indiginous peoples, have suffered loss of land, livelyhood and culture.
However, like the Native peoples of North America, they are reclaiming their culture and are rising again. One of the manifestations of this cultural re-awakening is the number of musical artists from the Sami peoples. Mari Boine, and Angelit (formerly Girls of Angeli) are my favorite Sami artists.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
