Gallery 42: The h2g2 Friends Gallery

I would like to announce the opening of "Gallery 42" an online art gallery for h2g2 artists.

A number of us have been posting links to our various artistic works and have found that there is a considerable amount of talent in Hootoo-land.

At the suggestion of Alfredo, I opened Gallery 42: The h2g2 Friends Art Gallery on my own Fotki space. Mother of God has offered us our first exhibit piece, entitled "Terrorized". We will be holding a Vernisage in the near future (as soon as we figure out how to hold one on-line). The URL for Gallery 42 is http://public.fotki.com/Mudhooks/gallery_42/

Currently, there is one main gallery. However, I have hopes of opening galleries for various "special exhibits", for various media (photographic, ceramic, crafts, etc.). Anyone may submit work.

Currently, submission requirements are:

The work must be your own and must conform to copyright laws (i.e.; not using copyrighted material which to you do not have rights).
No obscene or pornographic work (Questionable material will be reviewed by a panel.)

I recognise that there may be work which has great artistic merit but which some might take offense to. I may, therefore, consider opening a special gallery for pieces which may be of an adult nature. This gallery would be accessible only by password.

Contributors should submit a photo of the work to mudhooks@(remove)gmail.com along with their name (the name they wish posted with the work, and a blurb about it. They should also note the media (pencil, oil pastel on paper, watercolour, etc.).

Northern Lights on a Cloudy night

I was walking back from my friend's house late last night and noticed the moon had a halo. It was starting to cloud over. Venus was the only visible star.

Towards the south, some clouds were evident, but what struck me was three vertical "clouds", like a curtain. They LOOKED like clouds, but then I thought is was snow, coming down in sheet in an otherwise clear part of the sky.

The clouds moved slowly and steadily to the east and the "curtain stayed put. I watched it for a while and concluded it was more likely the Northern Lights.

It was garbage night so I started putting out the recycling boxes and a bag of garbage, periodically looking up at the curtain. While the clouds continued moving east, the curtain moved slowly west until they were hidden by the roof of my neighbour's house.

Not the most spectacular Northern Lights I have ever seen (actually, NONE have been as startling as I know they are usually seen), but bright enough to be seen through light, misty cloud, and the light pollution of Ottawa.

Dream: Japanese pilgrims, a rocky road, near death, and a rude awakening...

I was pretty tired this afternoon, and decided to have a nap.

The dream involved my trying to drive somewhere.... I'm not sure where I was supposed to be, or where I was supposed to be going, or even why I was supposed to be going where I was supposed to be going. I lost the car and was forced to search for it on foot.

Funakky, I found myself on a steep road which got ever steeper and ever more rocky.ntil it ended at the base of a huge cliff. Actually, it was only the height of a wall in a house, but for some reason it expanded while I was climbing to a huge cliff-face.

I found myself amongst a huge crowd of Japanese pilgrims who were attempting to scale the cliff as part of their religious pilgrimage. Some of them were using huge contraptions made from blocks of stone put together as sort of rolling stairs. In some cases, there were large enough for several people to srand on. In other cases, they were small and simply attached to the feet of these pilgrims and were supposed to enable them to stand firmly on the stairs or ledges up the face of the cliff.

The road leading up to the cliff and the cliff, itself was composed of rough stone which was thousands of years old. However, because the pilgrims were using it, and pusjiong these huge stone staircases over them, they were crumbling had been "repaired" over that time using blocks of stone and metal shelving (the kind you find in stores which hang from slots attached to the back of the shelving unit!?!).

The cliff-face loomed over the ocean which was a beautiful, deep blue, and the coastline which was rocky, dry and desolate (except for the town which was close to the raod leading to the cliff.

I was scaling the cliff amongst the hordes of pilgrims who were pushing and shoving to get to the top. I was a long way up the cliff-face when I reached for one of the rock shelf (which was part rock, part metal shelf), only to have it come away in my hand.... I started to fall.

Knowing I was going to be killed, I found myself trying to fly, on the off-chance I would be able to do so. It was actually quite beautiful and, while I was terrified, I was also in awe of the beauty and anticipating the sudden end I would have.... I was falling for several minutes.

Unfortunately, before I hit the ground, my phone rang and I awoke.

Beneath Edinburgh

This is really interesting....

Of course, Edinburgh isn't the only city with hidden depths:

In fact, there are people who "collect" underground passages:

Computer Woe Is Me...

Alas! Alack! Woe is me....

After my recovery from my "Great Computer Crash of 2005", I thought things were looking up. However, I seem to be experiencing stupid, niggly, annoying problems and I am getting really fed up.

My sound isn't working.... The drivers are there and so is the sound device. Just not working.

When I go to play a game which requires Java, the computer hangs. I have reloaded Java... Just can't get it to DO anything. Every time I go to a site which requires Java, it may or may not work. If it doesn't work, my computer freezes and I have to restart.

What is particularly annoying is that anything I want to do always gets so far and then one little step cannot be done.... Arrrgghhh.

I am going to have to have my computer guru come over and deal with everything. What a pain!
