remembrance sunday smiley - erm
the remembrance event always makes me feel a bit weepy
perhaps I'm easily emotionally manipulated, no-one i know was a service person well... ok my great grandfather was but I've never met the man.
my great grand mother (on my mothers fathers side) married a solider and the year later she was a widow so she married the man who became my great grandfather, he was then shipped out and she discovered she was expecting my grandfather, her new husband then became a prisoner of war. when he returned their relationship was strained and despite having my great uncle my great grandfather moved away leaving her with two young boys and he started another family,
we didn't know my great grandmother had gotten divorced till after her death (i was about two)

though I am now in touch with his children of this other relationship (they didn't marry) via facebook and it strikes me as a strange and wonderful thing that I can talk to such far flung relatives (they live in yorkshire) apparently my grandfather once went to look for his half brother and sister but never managed to find them, I often think of my grandfather, he was a military policeman and an engineer in his civilian life, he later became the councillor for his area of town and was well enough respected to have a street named after him. He didn't say much about his life as a soldier he had a commendation for stopping a solider who had gotten hold of a knife and lost his wits...
and told us the army is where he lost all his teeth and picked up a taste for very spicy food smiley - erm
I know he served in Ireland but I know nothing about that time at all.

it's grans birthday at the start of december I must remember to send her some flowers smiley - rose

I've found that if I wear old clothes to paint in, I don't get any paint on me. Good clothes, of course, get paint on in either the first 5 minutes or the very last second.

an extract from my latest essay

Sure start children's centres
Legal framework provided by the Childcare act 2006.

Sure start children's centres were first introduced in 1998 as Sure start local programs which changed to become children's centres and then given statutory basis in the 2006 children's act.
According to the statutory guidance for Sure start children's centres;

'Sure Start Children’s Centres are part of the local system of universal children’s services, providing easy access to a range of community health services, parenting and family support, integrated early education and childcare, and links to training and employment opportunities for families with children under the age of five'

The local programs were founded with the expectation that it would reduce the effects of child poverty and were first introduced in areas of greatest economic need. The program was overseen by the Department of Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Work and Pensions and each program was expected to develop according to the needs and wishes for those people in the area who were in need of its services. When this service changed into the children's centres the onus for the centres being in areas of economic need was removed and the scheme was expanded further into more affluent areas. It became the duty of the local authorities to oversee the project. Cuts in funding from central and local governments have meant a scaling back in the services offered by children's centres and these funds are not protected leading the government to announce that the main focus of children's centres will shift again back to those communities with greatest financial need for the service.

The remit of the Sure Start children's centres is vast, according to a government publication;

' We were told, for example, that Centres aim to break cycles of deprivation, close the gap in educational achievement between the most disadvantaged and other children, encourage better parenting, enhance child development, tackle poverty, identify safeguarding concerns, promote community cohesion, support healthy lifestyles and promote opportunities for learning. The wide range of services that a Children's Centre must provide under the core offer, and the even wider range which they may choose to provide, has given rise to some concerns that their focus can be too diffuse and that their core task has not been defined with sufficient clarity.'

So clearly it could and has been argued that the Sure Start children's centres set out to do too much, and that the system of centres was flawed from the outset. I believe that in order for improvements to be made to the service the aim of the service needs to be rewritten, clarified and streamlined with clear achievable goals in mind.

Charlie has just woken up from his mid day nap so he's watching peppa pig and eating crumpets

Oh, the class that was cancelled last week - my tutor had a chest infection so i emailed her, but I don't know if she realised i attached my draft essay to the email... do I email her again and tell her even though shes probably still a bit ill or do i wait till wednesday and tell her in person... when the final draft is due...?

which would mean i dont get any feedback... perhaps she will email me monday or tuesday to tell me she did see the attachment and did read it but it doesn't give me much time to make adjustments... and I have a horrible feeling I've gone down the wrong track entirely!
*glum*

need more condensed milk now...
