Foods in Victorian England had poisons capriciously added for aesthetic purposes. Venetian lead was added to sugar confectionery and .
In the sixteenth century when a Spanish frigate was captured, sailors would dump the cacao beans overboard not knowing that they were a luxury item in Spain.
more history:
In 1780 the first made by machine was produced in Barcelona Spain.
In 1795 J.S. Fry & Sons used steam power to grind cacao beans for the first time in England.
Chocolate was not really accepted by the American colonists until fishermen from Massachusetts accepted cacao beans as payment for cargo in tropical America.

Greetings! I'm well, since who can complain when you have at hand home-grown tomatoes and fresh basil? (and a bit of for after of course!)

Sorry, got locked out by "maintenance" for a couple of days! Nothing earth shattering on the music front, but I do have an interesting job tomorrow. It's a party that a friend of mine contracts every year. We always play his arrangements with a string orchestra of about 20, plus a drum set. This time the first half is all "Phantom of the Opera" and the second is an assortment of Beatles tunes and other 60's/70's rock. He does a wonderful imitation of an electric guitar when he plays the solo from "Born to be Wild" on his fiddle! This fellow leads from the first chair. Last year we did "Jump" and he started jumping up at the appropriate places. Then he came down too hard and his chair collapsed. Fortunately, he didn't fall, so he and fiddle got to finish the concert ...standing.

Dark contains approximately eight times the amount of antioxidants that are found in strawberries, which rank hignest among fruits. (I'm assuming that depends how much is eaten)*goes for more ...*

Among the works featured at the 1993 Whitney Biennial Art Show was Janine Antoni's'Gnaw", a 600 pound block of chocolate partially gnawed by the artist.
In 2004 the Samuel Adams beer company introduced Chocolate Bock. The limited edition brew infused the semisweet aromatics of cocoa beans with the dark complexity of a bock.

Hi there!
this is me trying to prepare to be gone for four weeks! Where did the summer go? I know there should be another several weeks in there somewhere!
We'll I'm looking forward to my "working vacation" if I can ever actually get there. I'll be just across Lake Erie from you...sort of. Hope it's a bit cooler up there than it's been here.

*cups hands 'round mouth to yell atfer hstwrd* Hi & bye I guess...exactly when do you leave?
Summer's gone? I certainly hope there's at least another month of it...& temp. seems to bear that out!
Yes hopefully it should be a bit cooler...depending what sort of temp's you've had there in Tennesee. A quick check on the 'net here shows 20 C predicted for Sun. morning(in Toronto)& 24 C for the afternoon. There was a site that did Fahrenheit/Celsius conversion...well, there's this one too - http://www.albireo.ch/temperatureconverter - that;s about 69 or 70 in the morning & 75 in the afternoon. So I guess check our weather channel's site http://www.theweathernetwork.com for Toronto area weather-& I suppose long-range forecasts-if you're able to. Then again the lake may make a difference.

The reason I think summer's gone is that when I return on 8/28, I have to hit the ground running.
That weather is encouraging. I found my F/C conversions, and this week most days Nashville will be highs around 31-32C. Last week, we soared above for several days! Too hot to unwrap any without a real mess. I pour water on my tomatoes and flowers until the ground is saturated, and they still wilt in the afternoons - as do I.
I hope to leave early 7/27 and visit a friend on my way up. Don't work till 7/31 AM. but it takes at least a day to unpack and recover from the over ten hour drive.I'll check in a time or two more before I go.
