What Next?

The wrist/arm problems I've been dealing with for weeks continue. My occupational therapist sat me down for a serious talk this afternoon. She'd mentioned before that I should consider a career change; doing law enforcement and maintenance are tough on joints. Today, she basically told me flat out that if I stay in this profession, I'm letting myself in for long term pain, even if I get surgery.

Unfortunately, this is not only the career I've been in since '87, and the field my degree is in, but it's the job that quite literally keeps a roof over my head. A house to live in comes with the position. So if I leave State Parks, I'm not only unemployed, but homeless.

Wrist Tendonitis Part 2

My wrist has been getting worse again since I got healthy enough to go back to work. Went in for therapy today. They put me in a new brace, which COMPLETELY (versus partially) immobilizes my wrist and thumb, and makes it impossible to write, difficult to type or drive. I’m to wear it 24/7 for the next four weeks. If that doesn’t work, even the therapist concedes that my only other option is surgery.

So, if my replies are slow, bear with me. Typing is not my strong suit right now.

Caution: Pitiful Whining Ahead

Well, for almost a day, I thought I'd shaken my cold. But, it came back with a vengeance, and seemed to have moved into my chest overnight. So, I finally broke down and went to the smiley - doctor this morning, and found out I've got a sinus infection and bronchitis smiley - ill

This is in addition, by the way, to the wrist that still doesn't work. If I were a smiley - pony, they'd shoot me!

So, unless these are miracle drugs, instead of spending the next 4 days with friends, celebrating Thanksgiving and my birthday, it looks like I'll be here at the house. In the company of bored pets who just wish I'd stop coughing and take them for their run smiley - run

I'm not a terribly happy camper at the moment! smiley - cross

Wrist tendonitis

I've got it: DeQuervain's stenosing tenosynovitis.

"It is an irritation and swelling of the sheath or tunnel which surrounds the thumb tendons as they pass from the wrist to the thumb."

The hand smiley - doctor gave me a cortisone shot. He said to continue wearing a brace and taking anti-inflammatories for 2 weeks. If it's not better, they'll do another shot. If it STILL isn't better, they'll do surgery! smiley - yikessmiley - run

It hurts, especially after being poked and prodded, then getting the shot.

San Francisco Vacation

Well, I'm in the final stages of trip preparation. Need to do a bit more housecleaning, finish packing, and learn how to use my new digital camera. I'll drive out of here around 6AM tomorrow, catch a flight from El Paso to Phoenix, then on to San Francisco International. I can't wait!

Hopefully I'll have good stories to tell when I get back!

smiley - cheers
