Meet Marian...the [friendly] Librarian :)

Hi y'all! :) As you may be able to guess from my greeting, I am from the South (the American South, that is) and obviously a fan of music musicalnote and musical theatre ("Marian the Librarian" is a character from a musical I've seen called "The Music Man"), and I'm glad you've stopped by my li'l corner of H2G2. My boyfriend is a 'researcher' here (nope, I'm not telling you his name . . . well, not yet! tongueout), and he loves posting here and having fun in general. I hope to learn more about how to use this site, and for those pros of you out there, feel free to teach me and share any tips you may have! :)

I am currently a graduate student studying Information Studies--my goal is to become a Youth Services Librarian. I was just awarded the London Library Intern position, by my department, for the spring 2003 semester, which is my last semester of graduate school. Yay on both counts (going to London and graduating next semester in the spring)!! I'll get to spend 16 weeks in London (I've never studied abroad before!) interning and seeing as much as I can of England. I just came back from a holiday there this month (August 2002). It was sunny and warm every single day, and I just loved being in England, even though I know the weather will not be that way in January when I return! biggrin

One of my pet peeves is all the stereotypes (mainly due to ignorance) that people have about librarians . . . that we all wear our hair in dusty buns, with a pair of spectacles perched on our noses, whispering "shhhhhhh" all the time. Nothing could be further from the truth. While some stereotypical librarians probably do lurk out there, most of us (in America, at least--I can't speak for other countries) are people interested in the following three things (in no particular order): serving people, helping to facilitate the delivery of information to users, and creating an environment conducive and supportive of all Americans' (kids and adults) right to intellectual freedom. I heartily agree that "knowledge is power", and I believe a friendly library is a great place to study, to relax, to learn, to entertain yourself, and to be! You might even type an H2G2 article or entry on a library computer! biggrin

I also work as a Graduate Assistant for my department--ten of my hours are spent in my department's library as an assistant and the other ten hours are spent working for two professors, both whom are experts in children's and young adult literature and services (what a perk!). I am an alumna of two women's fraternities (not sororities, as sorority implies there is a brother organization), Zeta Tau Alpha (social fraternity for women) and Sigma Alpha Iota (music fraternity for women). I love my ZTA and SAI Big Sisters, as well as my Littles. Currently, I am the President of the local Sigma Alpha Iota alumnae group in my area which is currently petitioning for chapter status after being inactive for ten years. It's quite exciting, and seeing as it's a music fraternity for women, you can deduce I am a musician musicalnote : I play the clarinet, I sing, and I play a little bit of the piano. I love music--it truly inspires me, and it's a great release! rose

I also enjoy dancing (Latin and Swing), reading, writing, cooking, watching TV (I adore "I Love Lucy", "Sex and the City", "Leave It to Beaver", "Gilmore Girls", "Felicity" [when it was on--now, I have reruns to look forward to!], "Frasier", "Will and Grace", "Everybody Loves Raymond", "Designing Women", "The Golden Girls", "ER", "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air", to name a few [too late!!] tongueout), working with kids, water aerobics and yoga, swimming, shopping, being with my girlfriends and my family, and finding reasons to laugh and to smile. Why not enjoy life? I also love my boyfriend with all my heart! He truly is my very best friend, and that, my friends :), is no cliche'! love

Whew! Wow, that's me, in a nutshell (or, in the case of this entry being so long, perhaps an eggshell is more accurate!). Thank you for reading and hope to hear from you soon! Feel free to teach me how to best utilize H2G2, let me know where you are located, and please leave me lots of nice messages! :) Have a great day! cheerup

love ya,
Marian (the Librarian) biggrin
