A Little Bit of History
During the 1300's, there was generally a lot of fighting going on all over Europe. Well, it's really always been like that, but it doesn't matter. The point is, during the 1300's, there was a lot of fighting going on. So people tried to keep their minds off it, because isn't generally the sort of thing one likes to dwell upon. Anyway, the locals in a small town in France created this game in with one person would run, while another person hid. The game was called Run and Hide. Simple enough. Those were the only rules; one person ran, while the other one hid. If the runner stopped running, or the hider stopped hiding, the other person won. This game didn't stay popular for long, because it was rather difficult to determine if you had won or lost. Soon, nobody played it at all, because no one would be the person who hides. The reason for this was because it was an extremely difficult thing to do. All you could do was hide. It was near impossible to do, because if you did anything besides hide, you lost. In fact, the only way you could succeed at hiding, was if you started the game behind a large tree or cave. Yes, I mean behind the cave, not in it...no one would ever to think to look for someone BEHIND a cave. So everyone said it was impossible to hide. Hence the phrase, you can run, but you can't hide.
