JEllen. Was it 'cos they don't like the same sort of movies or just that they aren't really very welcoming type people?
Whichever, it's a shame, i would have thought a movie lovers group would be great for you, well done for being brave and trying it.
Is the an type group near you? Maybe that would work better, artisty folks are usually at least a bit sensitive, which is a good start.
Ah, reading in bed, yes, i remember that. just don't do it any more, can't really get comfortable, i can only read sitting at a table. It would be lovely to be read to, but since in would either be in frog, which would mean hard work translating for me, or in english, which would be mindblowingly difficult for him, i doubt it will happen.
oh dear, just broke the rules

Hmmm....there's an idea. A virtual movie group. We all watch the same DVD over a weekend, then discuss it.

Hi JEllen, thats a shame, you being such a movie buff. I second the well done for trying though.
Perhaps Edwards suggestion is much more suitable for you?

Hmmm. As a standalone way to discuss movies, maybe. But it's nice to get out of the house too. I'm not much of a joiner myself, but I really ought to find some kind of group or class.
Meanwhile...anyone up for Film Club?
The first rule of Film Club is.........etc

Huh? Broke the rules? Should I be asking...
Film club? I thought you had a thread going that was something like that, Ed? I don't think I'd be able to keep up with set rulings of what to watch and then discuss...afterwards..Netflix is a bit dodgy in this weather it seems Does sound like fun tho....

Sorry! You clearly didn't get the film reference:
The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club.
The second rule of Fight Club is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!
I was meaning something a bit more active than the current film discussion in my Journal...like once a month someone picks a film and we all rent the DVD.
Discussion of the idea to continue over at my place? (In the Suggestions Wanted convo)

Nope, I didn't get the reference, I did wonder if you meant something like that tho
As for Fight Club, that is on the list too, haven't seen it yet

I like the idea, although I've got kind of odd tastes (my preferences seem to be top-rate classics, "arty" films, documentaries, and the lowest-budget schlock and exploitation films...) I'm usually open to try anything. Some of my favorite films are ones that other people have recommended and/or shared with me.
Problem is I haven't got Netflix at the moment and would have to sign up. Is there some kind of a free trial?

Akshully...maybe one rule: Nobody's allowed to pick a film they've seen already?
Maybe I should set up a page for it.

That "rule" sounds like it would make things all the more interesting, as well as levelling the playing field, so to speak. I'll look forward to seeing if you start the page up, and might just join in on the fun. One a month sounds a bit more do-able than say one a week, though. For me, anyway.

No sooner said than etc. etc. Film Club is now open for business: A3579438
Any idea how I can get it submitted at a higher level, so that more folk can see it?

Not sure, you have gone the only route I'd have thought of. Maybe one of the more h2g2 tech-savvy folks here will have another idea.
I'm so aggravated at work today- thankfully it's a bit more than half over. Here I sit, with piles of orders and service calls on my desk, and can't order any parts because my boss hasn't any money in the bank. If my paycheck from the 14th bounces, I won't be returning to work.
K had volunteered to pick me up after work- he get off at the same time, and I'm halfway between the old office and my house. So, I'll avoid the nasty trip home on the bus. And can get dinner in early, and have more time for movies. I think it's another installment from the "Horrible Horrors" this evening.

Ed has a page for groups
It allows for more exposure, I'll bring a link back for you
I think Jellen would be very pleased.
She has tried to do this before but times were slow around h2.
Those folks she was in the group with thought one of the films she liked was pornographic NoT!
So a more open minded group would help!
Movies are her second love -Her Leo comes first

I think I might know which film JEllen is speaking of. I seem to recall she and I discussing this once before. Some people are just so narrow-minded. And in a film club? Sheesh!
JEllen's recommended LOTS of movies to me. Some of them, like "Russian Ark", I have really liked a lot!!

Glad you do like some of my recommendations PC!
The people at the film group I went to were older than me and more formal. They don't like Leo, LOL, and they are more intellectual than passionate about movies. And they don't seem to be into analyzing camera work the way I am. One guy is real friendly, but the others are just so-so. Guess it all boils down to chemistry. My favorite person to talk to about movies is my brother.
Ed, I will check out the new hootoo film club.

I like talking about movies with you, JEllen. I don't always like all of the same films you do (and it works the other way as well, I know), but you've always been pretty much spot on with your recommendations for me.
My tastes run either one extreme or the other- either extremely well-made films, or the really schlocky stuff. It's the more "average" stuff that I don't always get into. But while I'll sit around with friends pontificating about films, and will lapse into snobbery and counter-snobbery with my film-snob friends, I won't knock anything even if I don't get into it. Intellectualizing can be entertaining, but I always get a big kick out of hearing your passionate descriptions of films you've enjoyed.
I have a couple of films I'd like to nominate for the film club Ed started, but I forget the titles! I also have a couple I want to buy that I've already seen. "Eyes Without A Face", "The Lower Depths", and "Le Corbeau". You know, when I was younger, I wouldn't watch subtitled films. I can't believe all the stuff I missed prior to my mid to late 20s!! I also really want to get "Peeping Tom" and "Children of Paradise" now, having watched them both again recently for the first time in ages.
Key: Complain about this post
