The Psycho Chicken -- self respect intact

So George Dubbya is in for a second term. I saw one of the UK tabloids this morning was carrying a headline along the lines of 'How could America be so DUMB?'. It's bluntly put, but I find myself asking the same question. This time it seems that we can't even argue that it was fixed - it looks like he actually won, fair and square.

It seems then that the real threat isn't George Bush - it's the fact that 50-odd percent of the American people appear to agree with his xenophobic, warmongering ways; they agree that a pre-emptive strike is an acceptable deterent against an unproven threat, and above all they agree that oil and money are worth more than blood.

I only hope now that the UK ensures that his partner in crime is not re-elected, and put in his place a leader with a backbone and a conscience. If such a person exists in British politics.

I normally don't get involved in this sort of stuff but the overwhelming feeling of dread in my guts tells me this is so wrong.

Tao te Ching verse 30 (Peter Merel interpolation)

Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,
For violence has a habit of returning;
Thorns and weeds grow wherever an army goes,
And lean years follow a great war.

A general is well advised
To achieve nothing more than his orders:
Not to take advantage of his victory.
Nor to glory, boast or pride himself;
To do what is dictated by necessity,
Not by choice.

For even the strongest force will weaken with time,
And then its violence will return, and kill it.

I generally agree with you and did feel very annoyed yesterday. But then I thought that at least it was a proper election this time around so at least it was nice to see them get some part of it right.
Incidently on the UK voting sie of things I wrote a letter to my MP the other day about the whole Iraq/US military aggressive streak thing. And she wrote back agreeing with me as well as forwarding my concerns on to the MOD. Now I have a quadary. At the next election I do not wish to support the current government but I would like to support my current MP as she seems to represent my views. Only she is Labour. Well confused now I am. And rambling on it seems. So I shall stop.

You will notice my objection isn't to the current government or party - it's to the current prime minister.

Aye, but what exactly are the chances of us getting Labour but without the current leader? I don't mean that they won't get in if he is there or not, I mean what are the chances of getting rid of him?
Unfortunatly it comes as no great shock that Dubya is back in the whitehouse, for his 'advisors' are very knowledgable men (they've been screwing the country for years) Plus it is only more than 50% of those that chose to go and vote. Yup, I know. You'd think all and everyone would have wanted a say in this particular election, but I doubt me that they actually bothered to get off their stumps and do it. And that's having several days to go and vote, not having to stumble to your local primary school after work one Thursday night. Ho hum.

Hi, Zantic. (Waves.) Actually only a few states (about 1/5 of them) allow people to vote over several days. But you're right about turnout. Just under 60 percent of eligible people voted, which was the best turnout in 36 years!

Obviously, the people who stayed home were fine with Bush. As were the people who voted. I still need someone to explain that to me.

Heyla BigRed

Nope, sorry, can't explain that. Don't understand it myself.
