Oh poo: Miami Vice is on ITV4. This isn't usually that interesting but, 34 minutes into it, I channel opped to it and find Frank Zappa playing a baddie! Grr. Somebody could have mentioned it!
Sorry for the aside, I had to vent.

I hate those 'comfort' messages that you get while on hold. By about the fourteenth assurance that my call is important and will be answered in 3 minutes time, I usually start shouting abuse. I know they can't hear me, but it makes me feel better.

Hmm.
I like call centres. They're an efficient, cost-effective way of bringing you services that previously cost you a lot of money, and the companies that provide them do so more cheaply than their competitors who staff old-fashioned "buildings" with people on the off-chance that they might pop in to buy/sell/have customer service of some kind.
Believe it or not, the companies that operate call centres put a lot of time and effort into planning the resources required to handle the call volumes they expect. Occasionally, the service that the company offers goes wrong, and then everyone wants to talk to them about it. It's difficult to plan for such things (when did you last plan for something to go wrong?) but they also have contingency plans to bring in extra staff to answer additional call volumes if their assessment of the scale of the problem warrants it. Do you really think that their objective in life is to p!ss off their customers? Customers can always go elsewhere, and often do, based on their assessment of service.
Now, the person who answers the call when something does go wrong is having to deal with lots of people with similar problems, most of who are angry, frustrated, sometimes abusive. Why not cut them some slack?
