Welcome to h2g2 - as you are new to all this I'm giving you a few extra hints - it looks like a lot but perservere - I hope that you will find it all helpful smiley - biggrin

My name is Feisor and I am an ACE (Assistant Community Editor) here at h2g2.

You've made a great start by opening your space by the way smiley - ok

We ACEs are here to assist new researchers so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
You can leave a message on my space just by clicking on my name at the top of this message or by hitting the reply button below - it won't hit back (usually).

The "Italics" (they are the people who run this place - so-called because their names are displayed in bold italics - God Bless 'Em) have left a message for newcomers at <./> Welcome-Newcomers </.> it's got a lot of the basic background and how-tos that you will need - a good place to start

Then you can take the H2G2 Tour at <./>A317459</.> to see how it all works smiley - biggrin

If some of the H2G2 terms leave you a little confused, there is a great page about it at <./>A632431</.> (thanks to Dastardly for this great page)

You might also like to subscribe to the H2G2 Announcements page at <./>A639056</.> to be informed of new developments and site news.

And finally, the editors of our own newspaper The H2G2 Post have made up a page of links - you can find it at <./>A616718</.> and then you can read The Post smiley - laugh

To make the best of this place you need to get out and meet people - it's just like real life - if you sit in your room (your personal space) and just post messages there, no one will see except you - get out and get involved and people will visit you and you can visit them (or not - as you like smiley - laugh )

As you travel round, you will find more and more interesting things.
Do not worry about getting lost, you can always return "home" by clicking on the "My Space" button on each page.
Every conversation you take part in will be listed on your page, these are your "threads". Every time someone posts after you, the thread will be refreshed on your page.
You can then return and reply if you wish.
If you hit the "posted" link it will take you to the last time that you posted in the thread (good for checking what's happened since then) If you hit the "last reply" it will take you to the last post in the thread.
When you no longer wish to participate in a particular conversation, you can click the "unsubscribe" link just below it, and the thread will be removed from your page. Then click on "my space" to return home.

Well - that should keep you busy for a while smiley - biggrin I am sure that you will love this community as much as we do smiley - biggrin There's lots of things to see, clubs to join and people to meet - please don't be shy - just jump right in - this is a friendly place. But be careful - it can become quite addictive - believe me I know smiley - laugh

smiley - cheers

Enjoy!!
Have fun!!!
and above all DON'T PANIC!!!

Well ... I usually only pop in for an hour or 2 each day - but sometimes I end up here for ages!!! smiley - laugh

But I really can't get by without my "fix" of h2g2 each day smiley - biggrin

I'm pleased that you find some of the hints handy - that was one of the longest welcomes I've done smiley - puff

The main thing is ... don't feel obliged to contribute straight away - if you feel more comfortable just wandering around and "lurking" go right ahead - it's a great way to get the feel of the place.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to drop me a line - if I'm not here and it's urgent just check the "Who's on Line" for another ACE - we're all happy to help smiley - biggrin

you must be australian with the g'day, you can tell i'm canadian eh? well thank you for at least being one of the people here who has communicated with me. im sure that as i get to know people here it will get better. you are so lucky to live in a country without snow. we have had sooo much lately it is gross. all winter we hardly had any, now that it is spring it is coming down in buckets. what i wouldnt do to live in a country without this white stuff. the first snow fall is nice to see, expecially on christmas day, but the rest could disappear, and im sure that we would all be happy. just for the extra work that it creates, getting up earlier, dressing in layers, the boots and jackets. then go out and shovel so that you can get to the car. start the car, let it warm up for 20 minutes. clean off the car of ice and snow. drive to work, take off the layers because the heat is on at work...... then repeat when you leave. if you ever wondered why canadians are over weight, its because we are too lazy half the year to get outdoorssmiley - smiley also because we eat on the run, and dont have time for relaxation. we eat at fast food restaurants most of the time, because we dont make time to cook at home. thanks for letting me get out this winter blahs....take care wildiris

smiley - laugh Yes, I'm an Aussie - and to make you feel even more jealous I live about 2 mins walk from one of Sydney's most famous beaches smiley - biggrin

I can understand where you're coming from though, I have a friend here who is Canadian, and she makes me shiver just talking about winters in Canada.

If you are looking to meet people - the way to go is to wander about and join in - before you know it you'll have so many threads on the go that you won't know where to start smiley - biggrin

yes i am seeing the thread thing, i have been trying to get involved in others lives here. you are quite lucky to live by the beach, i bet you can go swimming everyday if you want....someday i will see the world... i have some friends that are moving to australia soon, maybe i will be able to go and see them there. our country is sooo big, and soo underpopulated, if i were to drive across it completly it would take a week, that is without any stops. there are alot of trees though, and you cant get lost in the woods without finding some water, somewhere to drink. thats what ive been told anyway. what do you do for a living? right now i am on a personal journey so to speak. i have never taken the time to see what i want todo in life. i just went directly into the work force, and didnt explore my options on what i wanted to do. so i am looking to go back to school and study, what im not sure. i did want to study geology, but im wondering if my artistic nature would rather come out right now. i am just going to see what life is going to give me, and go from there. take care wildiris

Yep - I could go swimming - but never do smiley - laugh

"our country is sooo big, and soo underpopulated, if i were to drive across it completly it would take a week, that is without any stops"

Yes, your country and mine have more in common than you realise - though in the case of Australia, it's more a case of great wide areas of desert - though we also have snow covered peaks, and forest areas - even rainforests smiley - biggrin It's a very varied continent.

ours as well, flatlands, lots of rocks and trees, i guess that it would take longer then a week, because australia is a much smaller country then canada... how are you today? it was a beautiful day today here, but i spent most of it in bed. i have a very nasty cold that i cant shake. it is really draining me. i should be packing my stuff for my move but am avoiding it by being here. well i guess i just have to face the fact that i am going to be living with my parents again for a whilesmiley - sadfacesmiley - smiley wildiris

smiley - cheerupI feel sorry for you ... I am just getting over a cold - ended up having time off w*rk with it smiley - sadface Am much better now though smiley - smiley

As for moving in with your parents - try to look on the positive side smiley - erm There are positive things aren't there?

It's Good Friday here - so I have had a nice lazy day - just working on a new page for the Guide smiley - biggrin

So, how are you enjoying h2g2? Are you getting out and talking to people? Have you joined any clubs or anything? Oh, and don't forget to check out the front page - you can get to it by hitting the logo in the top corner of your screen smiley - biggrin

the positive thing is that i can relax for a while and actually get over this cold. also i will be able to get to know my parents, now that i am an 'adult'. not the little kid that they see me sometimes as.i have gone to the front page, but i guess i havent really read it, will do that. i have just spent the day with old friends, and the kids, really kept myself from crying i think that i will now though. i hate having to leave peoples lives. mostly for myself, because i genuinely like most of the people that i have met here, and made an acquintance with. take care wildiris

Try not to think of it as an end - but as a new beginning smiley - cheerup
Things change for all of us, but as long as you can be positive about it things will work out smiley - biggrin

You write like you won't be coming back to h2g2 smiley - sadface - I hope that I got the wrong impression - you haven't been here long - is there no computer at your parents' place??

yes there is a computer at my parents place, i am here now. i had a safe trip, and am very happy to see my dog again. i just may not be here as often as i would like to be now. but i will pop by now and again, i have really enjoyed chatting here, but it is now on my parents time. im not sure if they will allow me to use it that much. i think that we are going to the casino, it is easter here too. we live in a christian world. i hope that you have a great holiday, and you should start swimming, it is very therauputic. i would do it everyday, if i had water near by. good exercise too. take care wildiris

I'm also pleased that your move went well - good luck in your new circumstances (and at the casino smiley - laugh )

Yes, I had a great Easter - nice and quiet and restful.

I look forward to talking to you again

no luck really at the casino, my mom did the best of all of us. but i still had money in my pocket when i left. i was i.d.' there, which was interesting because i am 30. i didnt realize that i looked that young, apparently it is a good trait though. i will never look my age i guess. i have had that problem all my life. at least when i am 60 i will look 50. i am starting to make connections again here. there is always alot of things going on creatively in peterborough, and i can get involved quite easily. that is why i moved back to get back my creativity. and to get my finances and life together. think about the direction in which my life is going to take me. it will be a good exploration journey, self exploration that is. i am glad that i have done it. i just went into the work field and didnt see where i was going to be, didnt plan for the future. but i am prepared to do that now. thank you for the conversation. where are you in your life? i know that i am behind others in the scheme of things, but i guess that i had some other valuable lessons in life to learn first before i could go on with my life. i have never took the time to make myself happy, and am learning to do that now. what do you do for a living? are you happy? well those are my questions to you for now. take care wildiris

I do a bit of everything smiley - laugh I gave the corporate world the big A a few years ago and now do a bit of office work here, a bit of accounts work at home for people there and whatever I can find that pays anywhere else smiley - laugh At least now I can decide how much I want to work and for whom smiley - biggrin

Am I happy?? Basically yes, but I think I gave up a long time ago on the euphoric form of happiness and decided to settle for "contentment" smiley - smiley What does that mean?? Well, I guess it means being grateful for what I have and not longing for things that I really don't need. I have a family who (for the most part) I get along with well and a life that is (relatively) good. So, generally, compared to lots of people, yes I'm happy smiley - biggrin

G'day wildiris ...

Post 19

wildiris

well i guess that that was kind of a strange question. because happiness is a state of mind, that creates a feeling. i guess i just wanted to see what kind of response i would get. as for contentment, is there things that you would have liked to have done, so far in your life that you havent yet experienced? like your page says, i dont know anything about you, and am not afraid of that. it doesnt matter to me with whom i can connect with, just enjoy the connection. although i do know that it is better to connect with people in person, just because you can actually feel the connection, or not. but am enjoying our conversation nonetheless. what kind of corporation did you work for? i have only worked for one corp., big business place, and was a very small fry. i thought it was ok to have benefits and such, but i am a little too free spirited, and independent to make my life there. my dream is to be able to stay at home, or in a studio painting. i will get there eventually. take care wildiris

Feisor - -0- Generix I made it back - sortof ...

I worked for the same company for 15 years - when I started there it was just a small family company but they kept being taken over by bigger and bigger companies and I got more and more reponsibility. In the end we were all just numbers and when I asked to take on a different role I was told "you're too valuable where you are" smiley - laugh
So I left (with a not inconsiderable severance package smiley - biggrin ) and gladly said goodbye to big corporations smiley - biggrin

I know what you mean about making real life connections - but I love cyberspace - I think that people communicate more honestly when they have no idea who you are. When you meet people in RL you tend to make a judgement about them just because of who they are - by this I mean that you address a 15 year old boy very differently than you would a 60 year old woman (naturally) On the net you can only judge people by what they say and do - not by who or what they are smiley - biggrin
I could be either a 15 year old boy OR a 60 year old woman (I am neither) but it doesn't matter - at h2g2 I am only Feisor smiley - biggrin
