*ahem*
*feels a lengthy debate coming on*
Yes. Love is a bond. That's part of the point. But it's a heck of a lot deeper than just a bond.
If your mother died say, tomorrow (God forbid), I do doubt you'd be wondering around saying "Oh well. She was just someone I had a strong bond with, and nothing more. Fiddle-te-dee, tomorrow's another day".
Love and desire are different.
The guy you see on the TV you have a healthy infatuation with. Perfectly normal. Most likely a guise for being slightly afrid of real sex (Philip Sallon's words, not mine, before you lay into me for saying that. It's true. Think about it!).
Love is something else.
It really is.
I know you're nt a religious person, so this is hard to explain. Love is warm and fuzzy, content and whole, secure and plesant. Love doesn't care about what someone looks like. Love tells someone the truth (like when that jumper *really* doesn't go with those trousers). Love is the highest high, and the lowest low.
Forgive me for having a poet's soul underneath my heartless exterior.

*understands EE's point but wants to clarify what she means*
No. Love is just a word made up to describe a strong bond towards another, be that sexual or emotional. But love is nothing special.
Many people say they are in love but the bond between a partner and a relative cannot be compared. Where you have a stronger bond with a relative because of the genetics and so forth, but with lovers you get over them. Because they are not part of you physically.
Of course I would be upset if my Mother died, no doubt about that, but it's nothing more than an exceptionally strong bond between a mother and her child. LOVE DOES NOT EXIST.
Being religious has nothing to do with feeling love, in my experience it's the non religious who tend to be more romantic and idealistic. But that is irrelivent to the topic of this conversation, religion has no place except in religious matters, and this does not concern religion. We are talking about love not a Christian/Buddhist/Hindu/Pagan/or-whatevers point of view on the subject.
(Natalies opinions in very breif about religion: Religion saves people the trouble of thinking for themselves)
Sure I can feel an unbelivably strong pull towards my parents and other people, and saying that I don't believe in love doesn't mean I'm an insensitive callous feelingless inhuman tosser as you seem to think. I could describe the feelings just as well as any poet or writer, it's just that I don't believe in 'love'.
I do feel what you feel when you 'love' someone, thats what you don't seem to understand, and that it's a lovely feeling. BUT IF I DON'T BELIEVE IN THE WORD IT MEANS I CAN'T USE IT!
I could write endless sonnets and poems of admiration for my love, and feel everything you would feel, use all the flowery sentences that you would use. But deep down, the scientific reasoning is that it's just a strong connection.
LOVE DOESN'T EXIST

1) At no point did I ever think that you are a 'insensitive callous feelingless inhuman tosser', although those words would be perfect to descibe a few past science teachers of mine...I appreciate that you are allowed to have your own opinion in these matters and I personally do not judge or hold against you what you say. I just enjoy, nae, love the oppertunity to argue with someone who actually has a fully functioning brain
~yes, I know I can't spell opper...oppo..um...opputunity today ~
With all this exceptionally strong bond, love does not exist stuff, reminds me of one of the dafter Buddhist teachings. They do not believe that the soul exists, but say that the energy of the person is reborn. Isn't this energy the soul<?> How can _you_ be reborn if there is no _you_<?> Think about what you are saying. Tell me, what is a 'bond'<?>
I bring religion into the equation to try (in vain) to put across the point that there are people who feel and believe in God's love. I know that feeling and can't describe it to you particularly well.HOw can you love something, and feel love from something that isn't viable if love is an illusion, meerly a 'bond'<?> (Tanya's brief view of religion: all very nice but tecnically everyone bows to that same God, so why get so fussy and aggitated ove silly insignificant details if it keep someone else happy)
I don't believe in hate, but I still use the word.

Ok. I think we should leave this and talk about something which isn't as likely to wind me up.
Um.. what about pie?

Pieeee.......
I really wouldn't want to discuss it further. That's why I want to write a book under a pseudonymn... So I can put down my views and people won't be able to discuss them with me. Excellent.
I don't like people attacking my views. I have my opinions and even if they aren't popular I hate people thinking they know better and try to turn me over to their way of thinking.

*Simpsons impression* Pi is exactly three!
I wasn't trying to attack you
Honest.
I just like arguing with people who have a fully functioning brain.
Makes a pleasant change from teh halfwits in RL.
Seriously.
They had a half-baked war protest to get out of last lesson, of which I natuarally refused to take part in because they fairly obviously didn't care at all about the war, they just wanted an excuse to miss science.
Morons.

My god! Exactly the same thing happened at our school, cept they all got suspended and only missed half a lesson because they scarpered when names started to be taken down..

Existential Elevator Posted Mar 21, 2003
Does this mean that most 15 year olds everywhere think exactly the same<?>
I think I should post a notice on how to do a proper protest...
*ahem*
How to Protest.
1) Protest before the thing that you don't want to happen happens
2)Organise the protest.
3)Protest. Don't just go to the fish and chip shop.
4)Get media coverage
5)Know something about what you're protesting about.
6)Most importantly, don't use international political problems as an excuse to bunk off of lessons unless you genuinely care.
They did it again today. I' going to kill Theresa. I really am.

*sigh*
It gets worse. My dear English teacher was kind enough to inform me about what else exactly happened.
It turns out that several girls took off their tops and ran around the school topless 'in protest'... now, if that isn't just an exscuse to mess around, I don't know what is.
Even the people who did go on strike and had sit ins around the country, were only there for the thrill of protesting... y'know, making a difference, being a rebel and all that

Running around topless in an all-girls school in protest. Who spiked the drinks<?>
It's really sad when stuff like that happens. It makes me really annoyed and angry

Oooh no dahling. You look like a giant blob of snot...
That's sooo 1989....
*Shhhhhhhhh.....*
Existential Elevator Posted Mar 22, 2003
Well... the snot thing was the original idea, but I talked to my machinist and she was adamant that gunge is far to hard to sew onto raw silk, so I though that perhaps just some form of green moster rather than specifically a snot monster might be more desirable. My critics had said it was probably a good move and my PR told my that '89 is totally the 'in' retro year this season. I didn't want to follow the mainstream too much myself, y'see, and go with the camaflage look because that would bee too predictable, but I thought, hey, you can be trendy without being mainstream, so I went with the green. Would have been better if my machinist could have sewn the gunge on though. Honestly. You just can't get the staff nowardays, dahling.
