fish pond v algae

My mission is to be able to see & enjoy the 
in my pond..which is currently a pea-green colour..the dreaded algae..
..it is a small pond..(3ft x 4ft)..with no pump or filter..it seems an impossible task to keep the water clear..or even..semi-clear..i've tried barley straw..with no success..so if anyone knows the magic solution to banishing algae..i'd like to 'hear' it..&..my would benefit from living in a more pleasant environment....
