First weekend of the term.
Posted Jan 12, 2003
The first week of term is always a bit of a struggle, as I try to remember what exactly I do and get used to the long drive to and from school. So, I was really looking forward to the weekend; my intention was to have a restful Friday evening, just chilling and surfing, and then to get stuck into the next assignment over Saturday and Sunday.
The best laid plans, and all that...
Number one son came home from work on Friday and announced his intention to drive to Stirling after his meal. He hadn't seen his lady since Wednesday morning and that was obviously far too long. He left home just after eight, drove a mile along the road, hit a wall, rolled the car three or four times and walked away from it with a wee cut to his hand.
My weekend has since consisted of hospital (he's fine, thankfully, but was taken away strapped to a spinal board as a precaution), insurance companies and hire car places. My car is a complete write off.
The assignment lies untouched; it will have to wait.
Richard is a bit sore, but otherwise all right. I cannot believe he walked away from the mangled wreck with one wee cut.
He will never be luckier.

I had reached the dead frustrating part of any distance learning course, the trying to access/obtain relevant literature from a distance (funnily enough!), and was casting about frantically among contacts who might have something to offer.
The biggest bugbear was the article from a journal in 1996, which was pivotal to the module. I had made a point of visiting the university and staying for hours more than strictly necessary to get the password to access the journal from afar, only to then find that the downloadable journals stop at 1997. Grrr!
On Monday, I received a message from an erstwhile colleague, asking me to locate a resource for him, which I thought was in our resource room. I searched visually at first, then, knowing how I can see things without looking at them, decided to feel my way along the shelves. There I was, on a chair, being tactical with every box file....
Are you there before me? I only found the exact journal from 1996, containing the aforementioned pivotal article, in the resource room next to my office!
And I found it on my birthday! Someone must be looking after me!

Certificate course

Yesterday was the induction day for this year's crop of modules towards the post graduate certificate in special educational needs/support for learning. It was also the first time I had ever visited the University of Glasgow, although I have been matriculated there since September 2001.
I wasn't that impressed with Glasgow, not the university, the city. Mind you, I'm a bit of a teuchter at heart, so any city turns me off, which exonerates Glasgow to some extent.
Distance Education last year involved a tutor visiting our authority for two days for each module to host tutorials. This year, DE involves this induction day and emails. Distance, indeed!
The good news, as anyone who knows me will avow, is that the modules have been lengthened to fifteen weeks, as opposed to ten each last year. As I failed miserably to submit anything on time, maybe the powers that be have re-scheduled things to accommodate me, and others like me. Who knows?
This year's resolution is to get something submitted approximately when it's due. The submission date is 14/2/03.
Another good thing is that this module is on Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties, which is where all my experience lies. It will be interesting to see where the theory fits and where it doesn't.
Then the fun is analysing why it doesn't...
