I'm told that in Germany schools are legally required to close for the rest of the day if the temperature reaches 35 C because of health risks.
I've pre-ordered the latest book, but I can't pick it up on the day so I had to get a relative to do it for me. This means that I won't actually get the book until August :yikes: .

Evangeline Posted Jun 15, 2003
35 degrees a health risk? I am thankful for my "desk" job.
Been debating whether or not I should pre order the book or just wait until Wal Mart has them in stock. Which means I may not read it until August either.
When do you leave Uni?
Beware?
Evangeline Posted Jun 26, 2003
Well, the book was released on Saturday and Wal Mart sold out by Sunday. So, I picked a copy up at Sam's instead.
Just finished reading it, would have finished sooner, but we had somewhere to go Monday night and I didn't get home until almost midnight.

Actually, I bought it on the Sunday as well. They were selling it at ASDA at about half-price, so I bought a copy to leave at home with my family. I was reading another book at the time, though, so I ended up being one of the last in our family to finish it.
On the whole, I'd say I'm happy with it. Harry gets annoying from time to time, but Umbridge is the most hateable baddy in the whole series.
Beware?
Evangeline Posted Sep 19, 2003
I found myself telling Harry to "grow up!" more than a few times. Umbridge is *evil*. I like the way she was dispensed with, though.
How was your Summer?
Beware?
Just Bob aka Robert Thompson, plugging my film blog cinemainferno-blog.blogspot.co.uk Posted Sep 19, 2003
Relaxing. I didn't do much, but I wasn't planing to do anything. The main events for the summer were really my cousin's wedding and my grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary.

I wish I still had Summer vacations...
Very few highlights here. Not even the weather was exciting. Most of my spare time was spent on either home improvements or a couple of projects involving the computer.

Just Bob aka Robert Thompson, plugging my film blog cinemainferno-blog.blogspot.co.uk Posted Sep 20, 2003
The British temperature record got broken during the summer, and that was quite interesting.
Home improvements always seem to end up more trouble than they are worth.
Beware?
Evangeline Posted Sep 20, 2003
I read the weather reports on the BBC news page about the extreme heat/humidity and casualties it caused.
One of the home improvements was replacing an air conditioner. The new unit is twice the capacity, half the electricity and much quieter.
Last night the temperature dipped a whole five degrees(F)...thought a cold front had passed through.

I'm sorry, Farenheit temperatures usually mean nothing to me. Five degrees would probably be a couple of degrees C, wouldn't it?
Beware?
Evangeline Posted Sep 20, 2003
O Celsius is 32 Farenheit.
There is a converter around here somewhere...
Found one: http://www.wbuf.noaa.gov/tempfc.htm
90F=32.2
85F= 29.4C
It actually cooled down to 69F without raining last night.

There's a distinct chill in the air round here at the moment. It may be that the summer has come to an end. *sigh*

I would have to say it's my least unfavourite. It's helped by the fact that summer is when the holidays are.
The only problem with summer is the lack of football (okay, soccer if you insist! ), although the highlights of the cycling season somewhat make up for that.
Beware?
Evangeline Posted Sep 20, 2003
Hmm, maybe I should try spending a summer somewhere else. Summer is just hot, humid and full of insects and poison ivy here.
I don't insist
, it's only soccer when played by Americans.

Fair enough.
For me, the season is this one, when they come out from some kind of hibernation and spread their webs all over the sodding place (*shudder*), and in the places I go for holidays, there is no mosquito problem that can't be solved by a sensible policy with regard to lights, windows and going out at night, with a bit of help from some mosquito repellent devices that can be plugged in.

She likes terrorizing the household...
Her name is Xena(aptly named). She was born in 1997. I've had her since she was six weeks old. One minute Xena is curled up asleep, the next she is either hiding waiting to ambush, or zooming around the house like the is after her.
Do you have pets?

Back home we have a cat named Sally. We got her from a shelter fully grown. She's tortoise-shell coloured (i.e. various shades of brown), and her back legs were injured at some point in the past. She can still walk pretty much okay, but it's made her lazy. She loves to be around people, and especially having her cheeks rubbed. There are corners of furniture around the house that are brown-stained from all the rubbing she's done on them. She also purrs very loudly and miaows _a lot_.
