Wedding Day 11th July 2002
Posted Jul 11, 2002
Today is Shea and TJ's wedding Day. In exactly four hours time (it is one o'clock here in Sevenoaks Kent) they will be in the Church promising to love and honour one another for the rest of their lives.
It is quite extraordinary - and wonderful - that I can feel so much a part of their lives and be able to share this wonderful day with them although physically they are strangers to me.This surely is the strength and bonding of h2g2. It unites people all over the world.
I do think that people like Douglas Adams, who had a vision of the strength of how different people who would probably never meet in the normal fashion in Real Life have had the opportunity of meeting through the wonder of the Internet, are the true visionaries.
Admittedly there are down-sides to this new technology. But I really do believe that it is possible to unite many people of different ages, gender, nationality, and religion through this splendid medium. I suppose that the common bond obviously is an interest in the future therefore the new technology. The other binding bond is a common interest whether it is in humour, the arts, sports, activities and just plain interest in people and the accompaning moralities such as compassion and a sense of justice,.
I drink a toast to the newly weds, Shea and TJ and to the person who made their meeting possible Douglas Adams.
Long may his dream live.

Wimbledon again
Posted Jun 24, 2002
Hoorah!! It's that time of the year again. Tennis, , and of course all those wonderful people who play their hearts out.
So if I'm not with you, you will find me on the Centre Court or court no. 1. Wonderful thing this red button - and the blue button. I can fly through the air and watch whoever I want to watch by pressing one of them; and hear whichever commentator I want to hear.
Today it was Agassi and Sampras - and Rudzinski. And Safim and Pioline. And of course our women; Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati. I would love Jennifer to win. She has made such a success of her life
Join me for tomorrow -and the next day- and the.....

Visit to London,Bobbies on the beat and sun and fun
Posted Jun 23, 2002
This last week has really been one of the happiest ones I have spent for a long time. A very dear friend very kindly offered to take me up to London so that we could take part in a demonstration on the TradeJustice for the poorer countries. I accepted her help willingly and off we went, in the guards van on Wednesday morning. We arrived and the sun was shining. the traffic was overwhelming and the fumes were dreadful. Anyway we joined up with a wonderful bunch of people from Sheffield.
We arrived at the Cental Methodist church Hall and there were masses of people all with banners, and huge blowup FreeTraid Bananas, and hundreds of green helium filled Cafod balloons. We were going to meet our local MPm at 2.15 so moved onto the Houses of Parliament to meet our group. Although I have a mobile I am not at all sure how to use it so this was the perfect opportunity. My friend "parked" my wheelchair in front of St. Margaret's opposite the door of the Houses of Parliament and went off to find our group. I was sitting loving the sun, and revelling in having so many young active and enthusiastic young people all around. All of a sudden a group of four bobbies arrived, the one stood in front of me and said sternly
"Madam you are not allowed to park here. If you do not move I shall have to clamp you"!
Well, I nearly fell out of my wheelchair laughing and he went off. I saw him again later and thanked him for having made my day. He replied
"Madam, if you do not move I shall have to give you a parking ticket for loitering".
This caused a second outburst of laughter. How marvellous to be treated like a human being instead of a zombie in a wheelchair.
Coming home in the train, travelling in luxury in the guards van with one bicycle and two push chairs, we were astonished to find not one, not, two, not even three but four bicycles plus their riders crowiding into our comfy little zone.
I let out a shriek and insisted that we must be the most rewarding of all the train's passengers on the train. Fortunately one of the riders was unable to get beyond my friend and I and we had a wonderful time meeting him. It was his wedding anniversary and he was a trumpet player in a well known group as well as being a Professor of the instrument at a well known musical istitution.
What a gorgeous, wonderful day. I was over the moon and have continued on that high ever since.

Roland Garros

I am totally bewildered. Why is it when Serena Willima s beat her sister Venus that the presentation ceremony was "talked over" by the two British women commentators? It is something I have NEVER witnessed before. The speech of the winner of any Grand Slam final has ALWAYS been recorded whilst it is happening. Quite horrified AR1

Esoteric Interests
Posted Jun 3, 2002
I am fascinated. I have written on five different topics, in my journal and have deleted about three topics. Out of this I have received four replies. All charming and interesting. but I reckon that I must have the least read site on the whole of h2g2.!! Or perhaps I have extremely esoteric tastes? And yet I think that I am fairly "normal" But then what is "normal"? Ah me! Ah my! Big Sigh. (Could there be a smiley for this because it is often used?) AR1
