In their pictures,
I find a place I cannot go.
I can visit the sites,
I can even visit the people,
far beyond the moment when
the photo was taken.
But the emotions,
the thoughts were
not taken.
There is no way
to know what they
were thinking.
For photography
is not about thought.
It is not about vision.
It is about a finger
stabbing at a moment,
pressing home
the transience
of light and time,
a finger that will
die never knowing
what it has done.
But the muscle of the
mind can touch the heart
with an image or a word,
and that takes more than
one finger,
at least for me.
