I've checked the maths and Johanna is right. But then I distinctly remember reading one of the bits about Quidditch in a previous book and it said there were 200 Slytherins' watching, so don't ask me! It does seem ridiculuous that there are so few witches and wizards born each year, especially when you consider Hogwarts takes pupils from Ireland too (Seamus is Irish after all).
Oh, and I read it in about 2 days on holiday, so I know who dies now, and it's not who I thought. I was talking about it with my Mom and Dad, and it isn't upsetting (we didn't think, anyway) because of the way it happened.
The Order is a good idea - Tonks is the best new character but there were too many people introduced at the start - it was hard to remember who they all were.
We spotted some clever name puns (read them out loud) Grimmauld Plae, Kreacher, Diagon Alley, Knockturn Alley etc.

Maybe there are others in the year who just are never mentioned - seems a bit unlikely though!
This is going to sound very sad, but I've been having fun thinking up ways to get back at Umbridge if I was at Hogwarts. I loved it when Professor Mcgonagall put her in her place, and when Fred and George left.
Does anyone else reckon Moody has a crush on Tonks? Freaky, I know - he has to be about 40 years older than her after all, but just something in their bi-play at the start, and how it was Moody who went to help her after the battle when she was hurt... Most of the fansite's seem to think she'll get together with Lupin though. They'd make a cool couple, actually. Being a Metamorphmagus sounds even cooler than being an Animagus! Imagine if you could be both! I reckon H, H and R will become Animagi at some point.
By the way, the website www.mugglenet.com is really cool for HP stuff! Okay, I'm done now.

Perhaps lots more are born but they turn out to be Squibs... oh think how funny it would be if Voldemort (his wife/gf) had a kid and it was a squib!!
harry potter
Elentari Posted Aug 8, 2003
Voldemort with a wife/gf? Freaky - who would that be?
I read one thing on the internet which was v. interesting - you know Harry is talking to Dudley at the start about the 10 year old he beat up? That kid was called Mark EVANS. Evans is Harry's mother's maiden name. Could they be related? If so, and this Mark guy is not a muggle, that means he'd be at Hogwarts in the next book, as he's 10 now.
Coincidence? I think not.

Maybe one of his Death Eaters? Female obviously!
VERY well spotted! I didn't notice that and probably wouldn't have noticed that even when I get time to do a re-read. That would mean that Mark would also have to be a relative of Dudley and Aunt Petunia so Dudley may have a reason to beat him to if he thinks he's one of Harry's kind. I guess we'll find out in the next book.

Hope so - I'd like to take credit for spotting that, but I can't, it wasn't me. In fact, I think there were a couple of things in this book that haven't been fully explained, so we might find out about it later, like Aunt Petunia knowing about dementors and Azkaban - her explanation seemed made up to me - why would she have remembered when she usually tries to pretend magic doesn't exist?
harry potter
Anarane Posted Aug 9, 2003
We know she can't be a squip as Petunia and Lily's parents are muggles (Snape called Lily a mudblood). Maybe Petunia is a witch herself but refused to accept it and wouldn't go to Hogwarts. Another possibility could be that in book 5 she said she wasn't interested in those celebrities who broke up when actually she had been buying every magazine possible to find out more about it. My point being is that perhaps she was secretly interested in the magic world and did whatever she could to find out about it, therefore she knows about the Dementors and Azkaban, yet she makes out she hates all magical things. It seems like she's jealous of Lily anyway.

Johanna the Psychotic Bananna - - I'm back!!! I missed you, H2G2 Posted Aug 15, 2003
a thought occurs - it may not be a mistake that there are a lot more slytherins tan anyne else. maybe there are more bad people than good? in fact - no, there are 3 houses for good people, and one for the bad people (basically) so maybe thats hwy there are 200 slytherins and only 70 odd people in other houses?
harry potter
Anarane Posted Aug 16, 2003
Does it state somewhere that there are more Slytherins than in other houses?
Did you know that there are 107 mistakes in both Philosopher's Stone and in Chamber of Secrets (Films)?? Its on MovieMistakes.com where you can find the full lists. A lot of it is visible cameramen and crew equipment but some others are problems with sound, like where chracters talk but their lips dont move!

in one of the books it says that there are 200 slytherins, but tere cant be that many gryffindors or huff..etcs or raven.etcs.
harry potter
Elentari Posted Aug 18, 2003
Unless it's just a mistake that she said there were so many, she did't check the maths or something.

Has any of you two got a copy of Goblet of Fire where James comes out of wands first when it should have been Lily? I havent checked my copy yet. All I know that it was a error that JK had made and was changed in later editions of the book. Also has anyone spotted any mistakes in OotP yet? I havent!
harry potter
Elentari Posted Aug 20, 2003
I spotted that too! I don't think I saw any in OotP, but there's one in early editions of CoS where Voldemort is talking about how he's a descendent of Slytherin but it says he's an ancestor. I have that in my copy. You have to wonder who-proof read it.
There are mistakes listed on the website I mentioned www.mugglenet.com, but I don't like to read them, it spoils it a bit. Have you heard they might change the child actors for the GoF film, and that it will be in one film, the same length as the others?
harry potter
Anarane Posted Aug 20, 2003
I have heard that they are keeping GoF as one film but I also heard that all 3 actors have signed on to do GoF so who knows!
I dont think it will be the same without them.

i have always thought the numbers were shifty, but has any of u thought of the classes? i mean if griffindor and ravenclaw had a lesson 2gether, there wud be onlt 20 or so, and i dont think there are enuf teachers 2 go round, so they should have like free periods, shouldn't they?... plus we never hear how their washing gets done or if they have showers, the filthy lot!!!
we never hear about the astronomy classes (except for the test in HP5)

Hi Tishura
We did see Harry take a bath in the prefects bathroom in book 4. If JK wrote about Harry's trip to the bathroom every morning, evening and even after a game of Quidditch, we would hear the sound of thousands of people slamming their books shut around the world and see plenty of people asking for refunds in bookstores. We just have to assume that Harry and co take showers or baths. Imagine how boring it would be to read for half an hour about Harry washing himself!

it always annoyes me that harry never gives his friends birthday presents. he's with them all year round, apart from a month or so in summer, so surely their birthdays should be mentioned. the other thing is that in PoA hermione says she took out asubscription for the newspaper when she was in france, but in GoF she doesnt have a subscription until later on.
harry potter
Elentari Posted Aug 29, 2003
Good point. It always says what Harry gets from his friends for his birthday (although it is generally at the stat of the books)butnever what he gets them. Also, Harry's parents were murdered on Halloween, but he always looks forward to it and it doesn't even cross his mind. It's weird because it does a lot of other times.
