Actually it didn't go that badly!
I'm still going to fail it probably - I didn't do enough revision and that's the simple fact.
Still my level of knowledge as established in our lunchtime 'what did you put for xxx' was about the same as the other peoples. Esp friend.
Anyway. Sadly with doctor's exams people who do best in the MRCP *do* turn out to be the better doctors. Wot with what it tests and stuff.

About 4 weeks time. I'm just enjoying sitting in my house and not *having* to do anything. And noticeing all the crockery lying about the place. I might clean!

Hypatia Posted May 15, 2007
Oh my! Cleaning! You can't be that bored this soon.
Seriously, I have a feeling you've passed this time. You say you didn't revise enough, but you seemed to have spent a lot of effort on it to me. You deserve to pass.
So, what happens to Timmy and Fluff if you go to South Africa? Is Ben taking them? And do your results here have any bearing on your job placements? Sorry to be so ignorant of your system there. It seems pretty confusing.

Z Posted May 15, 2007
Mm.. Well I didn't start revising soon enough - though once I got into it I got really into it!
I have a sort of good feeling as well - my seat no was 42!
Ben can take care of Timmy and I'm hoping Rainbow will take care of Fluff, she had him when I was living in hospital accomodation and her kids loved him.
The exam has no bearing on the application - that would be sensible - but I realistically need to pass all 3 parts within the first 2 years of the new job.

I'm glad they both have good homes to go to so you won't have to worry about them.
Four weeks is a long time to be on pins and needles.

As well as knowing all the science and medicine, we patients want doctors who relate to us as people .
If you don't know something you can always go and look it up - but there isn't a book that can easily teach you people skills.
Your score on that must be as near as dammit 100% - so you're off to a better start than a lot of young medics.

Z Posted May 15, 2007
Well people say that - and there's a much greater emphasis on communcation skills in medical education at the moment. Unfortunately the classical emphasis on diagnostic rigousness has rather changed. It's an art that you can't lookup in a book.

Hi Z, communication with patients is half the puzzle to getting the right diagnosis, probably and there has been a major sea change in that aspect of medicine recently.Don't worry, most of us don't expect you to know everything ! The ward nurses are very gentle with new docs: in the first few months,I'm told.Good luck re: the results

JWG. I've been qualified 2 years now..

Z Posted Jun 12, 2007
Indeed...
Anyway - we both passed it! I got 67% and he got 77% but I think he used the sneaky technique of 'revising more'.
Turns out we've both got jobs in the same city (manchester) next year, so we'll be revising for Part 2 together as well.

SA - fun and a great learning experience.
Manchester - offered a five year training contract that is as rare as gold dust and comes with a 'number' that means I can get higher specialist training. I can't afford to turn it down.

Well done!
What will you specialise in?
(And i do hope you got round to the cleaning meanwhile: the sight of your sandwich toaster will remain with me forever...mind you, i did flood your kitchen whilst washing up!)
