WINK (and the MArtian Arts Review) sending much LOve to the Masses Posted Feb 12, 2002
Speaking of *splurging*, I went out to B&N and got the Nick Bantok book. They had another one that I didn't have either called 'The Museum at Purgatory' (and with all this talk lately of religious flavour, it seemed a bit fitting so I got it as well).
Today has been an eventful day. I have an interview tomorrow. I've been *looking* for a new job for a while now. Not terribly hard, but feeling itchy feet to move on and find something more challenging. Work here has become stale. I am not happy here anymore. If it weren't for the people I call 'friends' here, I'd have left a long time ago. I applied for a freelance design position with a company here in Nashville.. perhaps you've heard of it.. Gibson Guitar. The man called me today and offered me a fulltime designer position making $5,000 more a year than I am here to start with a guaranteed 90 day raise of 10%. I'm nervous. I've not interviewed in a while. My portfolio is old. And needs updating. But for some reason, I feel like this is it. This is the one. Wish me luck. I think I may need it.

Good luck Wink!
Ellen Posted Feb 13, 2002
Goodness Gracious, good luck on your interview Wink! That is exciting.
I think you're right about the Oscars Wink. I think Beautiful Mind will sweep too. I liked Moulin Rouge very much, but I don't think it will hold up too well awards night, except for music and costumes. It would be cool if Peter Jackson won director for Lord of the Rings, but it will probably go to Ron Howard for Mind, which would be ok with me too. I can't remember ever having a year in which I truly liked so many of the entries. It's a good crop of pictures. I felt sorry for Pearl Harbor, it got like one nomination, right? I actually thought the whole attack sequence in that was very powerful. I thought Ben Affleck turned in a good performance in that too, even though the critics dismissed him. When exactly are the Oscars anyway?
I need to go feed my cat, she's demanding food.
Thanks Everyone!

The interview didn't really go as planned. He really liked my work, but I just didn't have the extent of photography experience that he was looking for. *sigh* Oh well... keep trying!

Thanks Everyone!

PS The wow! smiley was for everyone wishing me good luck! Not because the interview went sour. *sigh* Thanks everyone for thinking about me.

got a scare this afternoon
Ellen Posted Feb 16, 2002
I got a bit of a scare this afternoon when I logged on and my page was gone. It just had my researcher number. Luckily it righted itself after a few minutes. I would hate to have to redo my whole page now that I have it like I want it.
Wink, thanks again for the E-card. It was really super!
I've had a slow week, but I have a nice weekend planned. Saturday I'm going to a matinee of Endurance with my brother. It is about a group of Antarctic explorers whose ship is trapped by ice. Sunday I'm going to dinner with my sister and her family - Tasty China Buffet. Yum, I just love fried wontons.
Is anyone watching the Olympics? I've only seen bits and pieces. I missed the figure skating, so I'm not real up on the controversy, but giving two gold medals seems like a fair way to resolve it.
got a scare this afternoon
the Shee Posted Feb 16, 2002
The Canadians were *amazing*. No other way about it. The Russians were good (would have to be, to have gotten into the Olympics), but not as goo d as the Canadians. They are probably still showing footage, so if you want to watch the two performances, I bet you could... I *knew* that the Canadians had won, and then when they got 5.7s and .8s I was aghast... And then when they came in 2nd.
I don't know much about this controversy, except that the French judge admitted to having traded votes with the Russians...
I don't know about the medals, really... I wish that everyone could go home happy, but that's not going to happen. Oh well. However they settle it is fine by me.
The Endurance
Ellen Posted Feb 18, 2002
Just a quick post, and then I'm off to bed.
I went to go see The Endurance this weekend, and I really did not like it. It's not that the film was poorly made or anything, it's just that the subject matter really got to me. The film is about an Antarctic expedition gone awry. It's a documentary, with real photos and footage from the expedition itself, which took place around 1914. Their ship, the Endurance, got trapped by the ice, and finally crushed by it. Amazingly, all of the crew survived the ordeal, but they had to kill all their sled dogs and their cat, which I found horrible. I was cold and miserable watching the film, just thinking about what those poor men had to go through. And it made me angry, all that suffering for nothing. Their goal was to cross the Antarctic continent, but why was that even necessary? Just for adventure? I dunno, it just really rubbed me the wrong way. I should say that my brother had an entirely different take on the film. He thought it was heroic.
Revolver
Ellen Posted Feb 18, 2002
Did you guys see the article about 'Revolver' on the front page? It's a great article; 'Revolver' is my favorite Beatles album. It's A676271
Revolver
tacsatduck- beware the <sheep> lie Posted Feb 18, 2002
A couple of things to post to first off
Hmmm I would be more of the thinking it was Heroic....The drive to do the impossible or the never been done before is totally understandable...well it is to me anyway...I guess it all depends on your mindset about those types of things....the only thing I can say is I am not totally crazy enough to say it is a guy thing because I know tooooo many women with the same attitude towards it...Especially women rock climbers...oh by the way usually women make better climbers then men I think it has to do with weight and flexibility but again this is just based on my meager experience
And secondly Happy Very belated valentine's day to everyone

Revolver
WINK (and the MArtian Arts Review) sending much LOve to the Masses Posted Feb 19, 2002
Seems I've missed all kinds of conversation! *sigh* It's been a madhouse here at work! They fired 25 people last Friday (thank goodness I wasn't one of them) and now I've inherited someone else's work, with of course - no additional pay. *shocker* So I've now worked 2 straight 12 hour days and I think I'm coming down with a cold or something. I don't feel real well.
On a lighter note, I got my hair cut. Off with the hippie locks and down with a more contemporary look. I like it okay.. but I have to say it's going to take some getting used to. Day 19 of the diet. Haven't noticed much change. Still wanting a big ol' cup of or yummy *sigh* Maybe next month... I'll treat myself to just one.
I read the Revolver article. I was pretty good. That's my favourite album too, Ellen! That one and then Hard Day's Night... next up!

Sarah Hughes wins Gold
Ellen Posted Feb 22, 2002
Wow, wow, wow! Did y'all see the women's figure skating tonight? Sarah Hughes was absolutely amazing, she skated a nearly flawless performance. It was like she was just flying over the ice, like there was no gravity at all. I was so thrilled when she won!
Sorry to hear that your workload has tripled Wink. Twenty-five people, that's a lot to fire all at once. Yikes.
